The cycle

Rahu and Ketu are always 180° apart (always exactly opposite). They move retrograde through the zodiac — 18 months per sign. So Rahu in Pisces means Ketu is automatically in Virgo for the same 18 months.

Across 18 years, they complete a full circuit and return to where they started.

How to read their transit

Read both nodes from your natal Moon sign (or natal lagna):

  • Rahu's house from Moon — where you'll be obsessed, expansive, foreign-pulled, magnified for 18 months
  • Ketu's house from Moon — where you'll detach, lose, release, dissolve for 18 months

The two themes always operate together. Wherever Rahu intensifies, Ketu (in the opposite house) is creating space by removing.

The 12 Rahu-house transits and what they mean

Rahu in 1st from Moon (Ketu in 7th) — Identity expansion, foreign influence on self. Marriage strain or unconventional partnerships. Self-focused 18 months. Risk: ego inflation; gain: new identity emerges.

Rahu in 2nd (Ketu in 8th) — Wealth obsession, family-money focus, speech amplified. Sudden hidden gains or losses (Ketu in 8th). Risk: greed; gain: financial restructuring.

Rahu in 3rd (Ketu in 9th) — Sibling-related expansion, communication ambitions, courage. Father-distance or dharma-confusion. Risk: alienating elders; gain: own voice strengthens.

Rahu in 4th (Ketu in 10th) — Foreign settlement, home-country pull, mother-related changes. Career detachment. Risk: career stalls; gain: new geographic anchor.

Rahu in 5th (Ketu in 11th) — Children-related obsessions, creative-romance intensities. Friend-detachment, network shifts. Risk: addictive romance/speculation; gain: creative breakthrough.

Rahu in 6th (Ketu in 12th) — Service expansion, enemy-conflicts, debt-rise. Foreign / hospital / hidden matters dissolve. Risk: chronic illness flares; gain: enemies dissolve themselves.

Rahu in 7th (Ketu in 1st) — Partnership obsession, marriage shifts, foreign partner. Self-detachment. Risk: codependency / divorce; gain: identity-loss leads to wider self.

Rahu in 8th (Ketu in 2nd) — Hidden matters obsession, in-laws' wealth, occult interests. Family-money detachment. Risk: secret losses; gain: deep transformation.

Rahu in 9th (Ketu in 3rd) — Higher learning expansion, foreign teachers, dharma-search. Sibling-detachment. Risk: cult vulnerability; gain: real spiritual breakthrough.

Rahu in 10th (Ketu in 4th) — Career obsession, public visibility expansion, foreign work. Home / mother detachment. Risk: workaholism; gain: legitimate career rise.

Rahu in 11th (Ketu in 5th) — Income rise, network expansion, friend-multiplication. Children / creativity / romance dissolution. Risk: shallow networks; gain: financial breakthrough.

Rahu in 12th (Ketu in 6th) — Foreign settlement, spiritual practice intensifies, expenditures rise. Enemies dissolve, debts cleared. Risk: addictive escapism; gain: genuine spiritual progress.

The 18-month timing

Rahu-Ketu transits land precisely on 18-month boundaries. So the "18-month obsession" is real — your Rahu-house theme will dominate your attention for that span. After 18 months, Rahu shifts signs, and a new house becomes the focus.

A skilled astrologer can predict, with reasonable precision: "from this date to this date, you will be obsessed with X, and Y will dissolve in your life." This is concrete prediction-work that other systems can't match.

What to do during a difficult Rahu-Ketu transit

When the nodes hit your difficult houses (1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th from Moon):

  • Rahu Yantra — placed at home, energized
  • Ketu Yantra — paired with Rahu
  • Mantra — "Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah" + "Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah" 108x daily
  • Avoid alcohol seriously — Rahu and substances together create maximum chaos
  • Naga temple visit — annual on Naga Panchami minimum
  • Donate during eclipses — these intensify Rahu-Ketu themes
  • Stay close to a teacher — without one, Rahu pulls into experimental dangerous zones

What to do during a favorable Rahu-Ketu transit

When nodes hit favorable houses (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, 12th from Moon for Rahu):

  • Take advantage of the expansion energy
  • Enter foreign collaborations boldly
  • Embrace unconventional opportunities
  • Don't fear breaking from family/cultural defaults
  • Use the dissolving Ketu-house side intentionally — release what's ready to go

When Rahu activates a major life-event

Several life events have specific Rahu-Ketu transit signatures:

  • Sudden marriage to unconventional partner — Rahu transiting 7th
  • Foreign settlement — Rahu transiting 4th, 9th, or 12th
  • Sudden career rise — Rahu transiting 10th
  • Major financial breakthrough — Rahu transiting 11th, supported by Jupiter
  • Spiritual awakening — Rahu in 9th or 12th, with Ketu in 3rd or 6th
  • Major loss / divorce — Ketu transiting 7th or 4th

These events almost always co-occur with Rahu-Ketu transits over the relevant houses, plus the dasha lord's involvement. This is why senior astrologers always check Rahu-Ketu first when looking at predicted upcoming events.

A practical exercise

For your own Moon sign:

  1. Identify Rahu's current sign and house from your Moon
  2. Identify the corresponding Ketu house
  3. Reflect: what has been intensifying (Rahu) and what has been dissolving (Ketu) in the past months?

For most people, the alignment is unmistakable. Once you see it, you can work consciously with the shadow-planet themes instead of being unconsciously pushed by them.

This is one of the more rigorous predictive practices in Vedic astrology. It rewards the patient observer.
