Pancha Mahapurusha · BPHS Ch. 36, Phaladeepika 6.4
Malavya Yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha)
Venus in own sign (Taurus, Libra) or exalted (Pisces) and in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10).
Malavya Yoga is the fourth of the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas, belonging to Venus. The yoga forms when Venus is in own sign (Taurus or Libra) or exalted (Pisces) and simultaneously in a kendra house. Malavya is the yoga of refinement, beauty, harmony in relationships, artistic gifts, and material comfort earned through grace rather than struggle.
How Malavya Yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha) forms
Malavya Yoga forms when Venus is in own sign (Taurus or Libra) or exalted in Pisces, and simultaneously in a kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna. Venus in Pisces in the 4th house, in Libra in the 7th, or in Taurus in the 10th, are textbook examples. Venus in Pisces is double-strong because Pisces is also the sign of Venus's functional benefic placement.
Effects on the native
Effects on the native: physical attractiveness in the classical sense (refined features, harmonious proportions), gift for art, music, fashion, hospitality, jewellery, or any vocation where aesthetic judgement is the product, harmonious marriage life, material comfort, refined tastes, and unusual social grace. Many notable artists, designers, hoteliers, and creative directors have Malavya prominent.
Strength factors
Malavya is strongest when Venus is not combust (Venus, like Mercury, can travel close to the Sun), not retrograde in dusthana, and not closely afflicted by Saturn or Mars. Venus in Pisces in the 7th house (own dignity through exaltation, kendra of partnership) is one of the most marriage-friendly Malavya configurations. Aspect from Jupiter or Mercury further strengthens.
Cancellation and limitations
Cancelling factors: combustion (less common for Venus than Mercury but still possible), retrograde Venus in 6/8/12, close affliction by Saturn (austerity that suppresses Venusian pleasure), close affliction by Mars (passion that disrupts harmony), and Venus in own sign in 6/8/12 (negates the kendra requirement).
Archetype
The Malavya archetype: the designer whose work is unmistakable, the artist whose presence elevates a room, the hotel-owner whose hospitality is genuine, the partner whose harmony shapes a household. Not the bohemian; the refined one.
Classical sources
BPHS Ch. 36 lists Malavya as the fourth of the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas. Phaladeepika 6.4 emphasises the marriage and material-comfort effects. Saravali links Malavya to artistic vocations and to the harmonious household.
