Hamsa Yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha)

Hamsa Yoga is the third of the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas, belonging to Jupiter. The name Hamsa means the celestial swan, the bird that according to Indian tradition can separate milk from water (a metaphor for the wisdom that distinguishes essence from appearance). The yoga forms when Jupiter, the great benefic, is in own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer) and simultaneously in a kendra house. Hamsa is the yoga of the dharmic teacher, the ethical authority, the wisdom-giver.

Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer) and simultaneously in a kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna. Cancellation and limitations

Cancelling factors: close conjunction with Saturn (Guru-Shani conflict), retrograde Jupiter in 6/8/12, close affliction by Rahu (Guru-Chandal Yoga, see separate page), or Jupiter's sign-lord being weak. Hamsa is rarely fully cancelled because Jupiter's natural benefic nature persists; its effects are dimmed rather than reversed.
