How a gemstone is actually chosen

Ask a jeweller and you will hear about birth months. Ask a serious jyotishi and the answer starts from the lagna, the ascendant of your birth chart. Every gemstone in this tradition belongs to a planet, and wearing a stone is understood as strengthening that planet in your life. So the real question is never which stone is prettiest. It is which planet your chart can safely afford to strengthen, and the classical answer is read from lordship: which houses each planet rules when counted from your ascendant.

That is why this calculator asks for your birth time and place, not just the date. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so two people born the same day in different hours can have different lagnas, different lagna lords, and therefore different stones. The Moon-sign stone, the rashi ratna that most date-of-birth tools give you, is a reasonable starting point, and we keep a separate rashi ratna calculator for it. The stone this calculator names is read from the ascendant.

The derivation, step by step

The result above starts from a classical source, not a score we invented. It follows the functional benefic scheme that Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lays out in its chapter on yogakarakas, which classifies every planet as helpful or harmful for each ascendant by the houses it rules. The lords of the trikonas, houses one, five and nine, are counted auspicious. The lords of houses three, six and eleven are counted inauspicious. And when one planet rules both a kendra and a trikona it becomes the yogakaraka, the single most constructive planet for that ascendant. Six lagnas have one: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.

The same chapter then lists, ascendant by ascendant, which planets work for it and which against it, and that list is what this calculator follows. It does not always match the arithmetic. For a Taurus ascendant the text counts Venus, the lagna lord itself, among the planets that harm, because Venus also rules the sixth; so this calculator does not hand Taurus a diamond by default, the way most lagna-gem tables do. Where the texts disagree about a planet for your ascendant, the result leaves that stone to an astrologer rather than picking a side. Among the planets that clearly help, the yogakaraka ranks first, then the lagna lord and the lords of the ninth and fifth, and the planet whose dasha you are running moves up. Those ranking weights are our choice, not a rule from a text, and the result says which reasons are which.

Which stone belongs to which planet

The mapping itself is the navaratna table the tradition has carried for centuries: ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, red coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, and blue sapphire for Saturn. Hessonite belongs to Rahu and cat's eye to Ketu, though neither appears in this calculator's results, for a reason explained below. The oldest primary source on the gems themselves is Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, whose chapters 80 to 83 examine gems, pearls, rubies and emeralds and grade their quality. Those chapters tell you what a fine stone looks like; they do not prescribe who may wear one. The wearing rules you see in the result, the finger, the metal, the weekday, the weight range and the mantra, are living jyotish-ratna practice handed down through practitioners, and we present them as that rather than dressing them up with a chapter number they do not have.

The stones that need care

Blue sapphire, Neelam, is Saturn's stone and the tradition is blunt about it: it acts fast, for better or worse. The standing practice is to wear it on trial for two to three days and remove it if sleep, mood or fortune sour in that window. Even when this calculator lists it, because Saturn helps your ascendant, the result marks the trial as required, and a full reading should confirm Saturn's condition first.

Hessonite (Gomed) and cat's eye (Lehsunia) are handled with the same respect. Rahu and Ketu own no sign of the zodiac, so they can never be a lagna lord or a trikona lord, and no lordship-based derivation will ever produce their stones. Practitioners prescribe them situationally, most often during a Rahu or Ketu dasha, after weighing the whole chart. If someone has suggested one of these stones to you, take the chart to a practitioner before wearing it; that is not a purchase to make from a table on a website, including this one.

What this calculator will not tell you

An honest tool should be clear about its edges. This derivation reads lordship from your ascendant, then checks the planet's sign (exalted, own sign or debilitated), whether it is combust, the house it sits in, and the dasha you are running. A debilitated or deeply combust planet is set aside for a person to judge rather than guessed at. It does not weigh aspects, yogas, divisional charts or the full six-fold strength (shadbala) that a practitioner reads before a stone is finally prescribed. If you want that done on your chart, ask Acharya from your free Kundali; it costs nothing and you can ask in your own language.

Two boundaries are worth stating outright. A gemstone does not treat, cure or prevent any illness or medical condition, and anyone who sells a stone with that promise is breaking both the tradition's own ethics and, in India, the law on advertised remedies. And nothing bad is waiting for you if you wear no stone at all. The classical texts describe stones as one supporting practice among many, alongside mantra and charity. Plenty of careful astrologers recommend no stone for years at a stretch. If the recommendation here interests you, take it as a well-derived starting point, not an instruction.

Wearing a stone well

The practice, where you choose to follow it, runs like this. Have the stone set so it touches the skin, in the metal listed for it. Wear it first on its planet's weekday, in the morning after a bath, having rinsed it in milk and clean water and recited its mantra. Start with one stone rather than a handful, wear it for a few weeks, and pay attention. The tradition trusts observed experience over enthusiasm, which is also why the trial rule exists for blue sapphire. None of this requires an expensive stone; a clean, natural, well-set stone of modest weight is the practice, and substitutes such as garnet for ruby or moonstone for pearl are accepted where the primary stone is out of reach.
