About this pooja
Ganesh Puja is the invocation of Lord Ganesha as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) and Prathama Pujya (the first worshipped). The Ganesha Purana and the Mudgala Purana are the two principal Puranic sources. Ganesh Puja is performed at the start of any new venture, before any other Vedic rite (which is why every other puja begins with Ganapati Pujan), on Chaturthi tithi each lunar fortnight, and on Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.
Key insights
- Ganesh has eight principal forms, and Sankashti Chaturthi (Krishna Paksha Chaturthi) cycles through these forms across the year. Each Sankashti Chaturthi is dedicated to a specific form (Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara, Gajanana, Lambodara, Vikata, Vighnaraja, Dhumravarna).
- The Atharvashirsha Upanishad (Ganapati Atharvashirsha) is the canonical Vedic text recited during the puja. Ten or twenty-one repetitions (dashavarti or ekavinshativarti) constitute a complete japa.
- Twenty-one durva (Cynodon grass) tips and twenty-one modaks are the classical naivedya. Each durva is offered with a different name of Ganesha.
- The rite is performed without muhurta restriction; Chaturthi tithi at midday is the strongest window, but the puja is valid on any day.

Benefits per dharma-shastra
Ganesh Puja is the prerequisite for every other Vedic rite, which is its primary scriptural status. As a standalone puja it is performed at the start of a new business, before a major examination, before purchase of a new vehicle, before signing a new lease, and before pregnancy. The Ganesha Purana credits it with the removal of all four classes of obstacles (adhyatmika, adhibhautika, adhidaivika and karmika).
