Mula Nakshatra
Mūla
Mula is the nineteenth nakshatra, opening Sagittarius from 0°00' to 13°20'. Its presiding deity is Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution who guards the southwest, and its ruling planet is Ketu. The name Mula means "the root." The asterism is associated with going to the bottom of things, with original investigation, and with the karmic root from which a life grows. Mula is gandanta (Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp at its start) and is one of the most karmically marked nakshatras.

Symbolism
The bunch of roots symbolises foundational reality: the roots that hold the visible plant. Mula natives are characteristically root-seekers: they go to the source, the cause, the original. The Nirriti deity gives the asterism a destruction-rebirth quality: what cannot stand at the root must be cleared.
Personality of Mula natives
Personality of Mula natives: philosophical, investigative, sometimes restless, often unconventional, and unusually willing to sit with uncomfortable truth. The Ketu rulership gives them detachment and mokshic instincts; Nirriti's influence gives them the willingness to work with what is breaking down. They can be either very materially successful (when the root-investigation is professional) or very renunciate (when it is spiritual).
The four padas
The four padas of Mula fall in Sagittarius-Aries (1st pada, Mars navamsa, the most warrior-like), Sagittarius-Taurus (2nd, Venus, more sensual), Sagittarius-Gemini (3rd, Mercury, articulate and intellectual), and Sagittarius-Cancer (4th, Moon, the most emotional). The 1st pada straddles the gandanta cusp.
Career inclinations
Career inclinations: research at the foundational level, philosophy and spiritual teaching, herbal and root medicine, investigative journalism, security and intelligence work, surgery, archaeology, anthropology, occult studies, and any vocation where original root-cause investigation is the deliverable.
Marriage compatibility
Marriage compatibility: Mula's gana is Rakshasa, yoni is dog (same as Ardra), nadi is Adi, varna is Butcher. Dog-yoni mate is Ardra. Mula natives often have non-standard marriage patterns: late, twice, or against family wishes. Classical texts treat the first marriage of a Mula native as karmically significant.
Classically compatible

- Magha (Rat yoni)
- Purva Ashadha (Monkey yoni)

Health themes
Health themes: hip and thigh issues (Sagittarius rulerships), sciatica, liver concerns, accident-proneness (the Nirriti and Ketu combination), and tendency to mood disorders. Mula natives benefit from groundedness practices.
Spiritual orientation
Spiritually, Mula is one of the most spiritually-oriented nakshatras. Many serious renunciates and mystics have strong Mula emphasis. The teaching of Nirriti is that what dissolves is making room for what arises; the teaching of Ketu is that the root self is beyond name and form.
Classical sources
BPHS assigns Ketu as Mula's dasha lord. Phaladeepika treats Mula as one of the gandanta nakshatras requiring shanti rituals at birth. Brihat Samhita lists Mula among the tikshna (sharp) and ugra (intense) nakshatras.
The dasha lord Ketu starts every Mula native's Vimshottari sequence. Read the Ketu Mahadasha effects page for what this Mahadasha brings.
