Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap is the recitation of the Tryambakam mantra from the Rigveda (7.59.12) to Lord Shiva in his form as the conqueror of death. The mantra is also called the Rudra Mantra or the Mrita-Sanjivani Mantra. Recitation in counts of 108, 1100, 11000 or 125000 (sava-laksha) is the classical sequence. Performed during serious illness, in the running of a Maraka dasha or antardasha, during a difficult Sade Sati phase, or as a long-life vrata for an elder.

- The mantra is from the Rigveda Mandala 7, Sukta 59, mantra 12, ascribed to Sage Vasishtha. The Yajurveda Samhita repeats it as part of the Rudra Adhyaya. It is one of the most authoritative Vedic mantras.
- Japa count scales the rite. 108 daily for general wellbeing. 1100 in a single sitting for a specific health concern. 11000 in eleven sittings (Laghu Anushthana) for serious illness. 125000 spread over forty-one days (Sava-Laksha Anushthana) for life-threatening conditions or a Maraka dasha countermeasure.
- Each japa is accompanied by an ahuti of til, ghee and bilva patra into the homa-kund. The 125000 count requires a parallel Dashamsha homa (12500 ahutis), which is typically performed at the end of the forty-one-day cycle.
- The rite is performed under priestly guidance. Self-japa is permitted for the 108-daily count; the larger counts require a Sankalpa, a Niyama (dietary and conduct rules during the period) and a closing Purnahuti.

Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap is the textbook rite for life-threatening illness, for the running of a Maraka Mahadasha or Antardasha, for a chart-identified Mrityu yoga, and for the long-life vrata of an elder. The Rigveda itself frames the mantra as a prayer for release from the bondage of death (mrityormukshiya). It is one of the few Vedic rites that the Yajurveda Samhita explicitly authorises for chronic illness.
