Cancellation Raj Yoga · Phaladeepika 7.26-7.29

Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga

A debilitated planet has its debility cancelled, often elevating it to Raj Yoga territory.

Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga is the cancellation-of-debility yoga. It forms when a planet debilitated in a sign has that debility cancelled by one of a small set of structural rules. Mantreswara files the rules inside his Maharajayoga chapter, Phaladeepika Adhyaya VII, and the results he gives there are kingly, so the tradition does treat the cancellation as converting weakness into strength rather than merely repairing it.

The rules come from Phaladeepika Adhyaya VII, the Maharajayoga chapter, at slokas 26 to 29. Mantreswara gives three: (1) the lord of the sign of debility, or the lord of the planet's exaltation sign, in a kendra from the Lagna or from the Moon (7.26, restated at 7.29), (2) those two lords in mutual kendras (7.27), and (3) the debilitated planet aspected by the lord of the sign it occupies (7.28), with a stronger result if the debilitated planet is also outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The fourth rule commonly quoted, sign exchange between the debilitated planet and its dispositor, is later practice and is not in these four verses. Any one of the rules cancels the debility and the planet is read as effectively strong.

Effects on the native: rise from apparent disadvantage, distinctive capability in the area associated with the debilitated planet, and the paradoxical pattern where the chart's "weak" point becomes its strongest. A native with a debilitated Mars whose debility is cancelled often achieves more in Mars-related areas (action, leadership, surgery, real estate) than a native with a merely well-placed Mars. The yoga rewards the native who works through what looks like a weakness.

ബലം നൽകുന്ന ഘടകങ്ങൾ

Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga is strongest when the cancellation involves multiple rules (e.g., the debility-sign lord in a kendra AND the planet in mutual aspect with that lord), when the cancellation lord is itself dignified, and when the running dasha activates the configuration. Saturn debilitated in Aries with Mars (Aries lord) in a kendra in own sign is a classical strong example.

The cancellation can itself be undermined: if the debility-sign lord is combust, retrograde in dusthana, or closely afflicted by Rahu/Ketu, the cancellation becomes nominal rather than real. Some commentators distinguish between "structural" Neecha-Bhanga (rule satisfied technically) and "functional" Neecha-Bhanga (rule satisfied with the cancellation lord itself dignified). Only the latter delivers full Raj Yoga results.

മൂലരൂപം

The Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga archetype: the public figure who rose from a difficult starting position, the leader whose well-known weakness became a strength, the late-bloomer whose early disadvantages produced unusual capability. Not the privileged start; the conversion of disadvantage.

പരമ്പരാഗത ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ

The locus is Phaladeepika 7.26 to 7.29, inside the Maharajayoga chapter, which is itself the strongest statement the text makes about this configuration: cancelled debility is filed with the royal yogas rather than treated as mere repair. The results given are large, a just ruler at 7.26 and an emperor at 7.27 and 7.29. BPHS Chapter 42 is "Combinations for Penury" and carries no Neecha-Bhanga rule set; Santhanam refers to cancelled debilitation only in passing, in his notes on a worked chart. Saravali does not treat the subject under this name.

Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga നെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പതിവ് ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ

What is Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga?+

It is the "cancellation of debility" Raj Yoga, formed when a debilitated planet has its debility structurally cancelled and is converted from weakness to source of distinctive strength.

How is debility cancelled?+

Four rules are usually quoted, three of them from the verses: (1) debility-sign lord in a kendra, (2) exaltation-sign lord in a kendra, (3) planet aspected by debility-sign lord, (4) sign exchange with debility-sign lord.

Does cancelled debility become equivalent to exaltation?+

Not literally exaltation. Phaladeepika places the rules in its Maharajayoga chapter and gives kingly results for them, which is why the tradition reads cancelled debility as Raj Yoga territory rather than mere repair. In practice the native often achieves more in the planet's area than someone with a merely well-placed planet.

Can the cancellation itself be cancelled?+

Yes. If the cancellation lord is combust, retrograde in dusthana, or closely afflicted by Rahu/Ketu, the cancellation becomes nominal. Strong Neecha-Bhanga requires the cancellation lord to also be dignified.

When does Neecha-Bhanga Raj Yoga manifest?+

During the Mahadasha or antardasha of the debilitated planet itself, or of the cancellation lord. Many natives report unusually positive results in periods classical screens would have flagged as difficult.
