Atla Taddi 2026 falls on Wednesday, 28 October, the Ashwin (Ashwayuja) krishna tritiya, one day before Karva Chauth. Telugu households in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana keep the vrat nirjala, without water, from before sunrise, and the fast ends only when the moon is sighted at moonrise. Everything else in the day, the Gauri puja, the atlu naivedyam, the gobbemmalu play, happens in the pradosh hours before that moonrise. So the first thing to fix is not the puja muhurtam, it is the moment the moon actually comes up where you live.
Find your city's moonrise first
Moonrise is not the same clock time in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Chennai, and Delhi. The moon lags the sun's path by roughly the same east-west spread that makes Karva Chauth moonrise vary across North India, and the same spread applies here a day earlier. A woman in Kolkata sees the moon well before a woman in Mumbai, because the moon rises later the further west you are on the same tithi evening. The table below gives moonrise and the pradosh window (dusk to roughly two and a half hours after sunset, when Gauri puja is done) for sixteen Indian cities, read against the krishna tritiya that is in force from 28 October 04:07 IST to 29 October 01:07 IST.

| Chandigarh | 17:37 | 17:37 to 20:13 | 19:08 |
| Bhopal | 17:43 | 17:43 to 20:15 | 19:26 |
| Indore | 17:50 | 17:50 to 20:22 | 19:33 |
| Nagpur | 17:39 | 17:39 to 20:10 | 19:24 |
For the two Telugu states, Hyderabad's moonrise is 19:35 IST, and the tithi, krishna tritiya, is still in force at that hour, so the fast there ends cleanly on the moon's first appearance. Chennai and Bengaluru, which many Telugu families also live in, moonrise just a couple of minutes either side of Hyderabad's. If your town is not listed, the nearest city on the table will be within a few minutes, since moonrise changes gradually across a few hundred kilometres of longitude, not abruptly.
A few readers outside India have asked too. Dubai's moonrise is 19:23 GST and Singapore's is 20:54 SGT, both still inside krishna tritiya. Travellers to the US or Canada should check before assuming the date carries over: in New York and Toronto, the tithi at moonrise that evening is already krishna chaturthi, a full tithi ahead of what India is observing, so households there who fast by the tithi rather than the calendar date will keep Atla Taddi a day later, on their own local evening when krishna tritiya is in force.
What the vrat is for
Atla Taddi, also called Atla Tadde, is kept by married Telugu women for their husband's long life and for the health of the marriage, and by unmarried girls for a good husband in due course. It sits in the same family of vrats as Karva Chauth and Teej, all read on a tritiya or chaturthi of the dark fortnight in the months around the monsoon's end, but it keeps its own distinct vidhanam. The nirjala part is taken seriously: no water from before sunrise, broken only after the moon is sighted and given arghyam in the evening.
The nomu, the puja, and the atlu
The nomu, the vrat's full ritual sequence, begins with a bath and a Gauri puja set up with a clay or turmeric image of Gauri, flowers, and a reading of the Atla Taddi legend, usually recalling how Goddess Gauri blessed a devoted wife. Women gather in groups for this, often at one home or in a temple courtyard, and the puja itself is done in the pradosh window, the roughly two and a half hours after sunset, well ahead of moonrise.
The signature offering is atlu, a soft rice-flour dosa stuffed with jaggery and coconut, fried and served warm. Ten atlu are prepared and given to ten married women as naivedyam, a number that is followed deliberately rather than approximately, since the exchange of ten atlu among ten suhagan women is treated as part of the vrat's merit, not a side detail. Girls who are not yet married make and share atlu too, as part of learning the vidhanam from their mothers and grandmothers.
Alongside the puja, young women and girls play on swings strung up in courtyards and under trees, singing folk songs, and draw gobbemmalu, cow-dung and flower arrangements set out in rows on the floor, a tradition shared with Bathukamma season that Atla Taddi closes out. These are the lighter, communal parts of the day, running alongside the stricter solo discipline of the fast itself.
Breaking the fast at moonrise
The vrat ends only with chandra darshan, sighting the moon, followed by arghyam, an offering of water poured out toward the moon. Only after this does a woman take her first sip of water and her first food of the day, usually shared with her husband if he is present. Nothing about the puja timing substitutes for this. A household that finishes Gauri puja at 19:00 but has a 19:35 moonrise still fasts, water included, for those extra minutes. Cloud cover on the eastern horizon is the one real wrinkle year to year, and most families simply wait a little past the tabulated moonrise time if the moon is not yet visible, rather than treating the clock time as absolute.
Atla Taddi's whole premise, a woman's fast kept explicitly for her husband's life and the marriage's wellbeing, is also why so many women use the day to ask a wider question about their married life in the chart itself, not only the vrat. If you want to know what your own chart says about marital timing, compatibility, or a lingering dosha, Ask Acharya will read it against your actual birth details, and a free kundali is the place to start if you have not generated one yet.

सामान्य प्रश्न
What is the date of Atla Taddi in 2026?+
Atla Taddi falls on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. It is the Ashwin krishna tritiya, read a day before Karva Chauth, which falls the next day, Thursday 29 October.
What time does the Atla Taddi fast break in Hyderabad?+
In Hyderabad, moonrise on 28 October 2026 is at 19:35 IST, and krishna tritiya is still in force at that hour, so the nirjala fast ends there once the moon is sighted and given arghyam.
Why is the moonrise time different in every city?+
Moonrise shifts gradually with longitude, the same reason Karva Chauth moonrise varies across North India. Cities further east, like Kolkata, see the moon rise earlier than cities further west, like Mumbai, even though everyone is observing the same tithi.
Is Atla Taddi the same festival as Karva Chauth?+
They are closely related but not identical. Both are fasts kept by married women for their husbands, on adjoining tithis a day apart, but Atla Taddi has its own Telugu vidhanam, including the atlu naivedyam and the swing and gobbemmalu traditions, that Karva Chauth does not share.
What are atlu and why are ten of them offered?+
Atlu are rice-flour dosas filled with jaggery and coconut. Ten atlu are made and given to ten married women as naivedyam, a specific count that is followed as part of the vrat rather than treated as approximate.
Can unmarried women observe Atla Taddi?+
Yes. Unmarried girls keep the vrat too, praying for a good husband in future, and take part in the nomu, the puja, and the swing and gobbemmalu traditions alongside married women.
