Mangal Dosh Puja is the propitiation rite for the chart yoga in which Mars (Mangal) occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. Treated in the Phaladeepika and in the Jaimini tradition, the dosha is principally a delay-in-marriage and marital-harmony concern. The canonical countermeasure is the Mangal Shanti Puja performed at Mangalnath temple (Ujjain) or at home with a pandit qualified for the Kuja Devata invocation.

- The dosha is graded by intensity. First-house and seventh-house Mangal are the strongest forms; fourth and twelfth are intermediate; eighth-house Mangal is the most discussed. The rite's ahuti count scales with the grade.
- Mangal Shanti is most fruitful on a Tuesday, on a Mars-favoured nakshatra (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta), and on a Shukla-paksha tithi avoiding Chaturthi and Navami.
- Coral (moonga), red flowers, red cloth, ghee, gud (jaggery), masoor dal and khadira samidha are the canonical offerings. The pandit conducts a homa with these substances.
- The rite is sometimes performed jointly for the bride and groom before a marriage where one party has Mangal Dosh. This is a recognised remedial sequence in Jaimini practice.

Mangal Dosh Puja is the textbook countermeasure to the chart yoga. The Phaladeepika lists the dosha as a cause of delay in marriage, marital quarrels, separation, and in the eighth-house form, widowhood. The Jaimini countermeasure is twofold: the Shanti puja for the affected individual, and a Kumbh-Vivaha (banana-tree or peepal-tree mock marriage) before the actual marriage where the dosha is strong. The pandit will advise on which of the two is appropriate after reviewing the chart.
