Can You Buy a Car on Thursday?

Yes. Thursday is a good day to buy a car or a bike, because the day belongs to Guru (Brihaspati), the graha of growth, protection and sound judgement, and Vidhata's vehicle muhurat rules count Thursday among the four preferred weekdays for taking delivery.

The other three are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The two days the rules tell you to avoid are Tuesday, ruled by Mangal, and Saturday, ruled by Shani. Mars carries haste and accident, Saturn carries delay, breakdown and paperwork that will not close. Sunday sits in the middle, neither recommended nor warned against. So if the showroom offers you a Thursday delivery slot, that is a slot worth taking.

What Guru actually contributes

A vehicle is an expensive thing you will keep for years and one of the few purchases that can physically hurt you. Electional astrology treats those two facts as the whole reason to pick a day. Guru is the natural significator of wealth that lasts, of good counsel, and of the protective influence that keeps a bad situation from becoming a worse one. A purchase begun under a benefic day lord is read as one that holds its value and stays out of trouble.

Inside Thursday itself, the strongest hour is the Guru hora, and on Thursday the Guru hora is the first hora of the day, beginning at local sunrise. That is the cleanest window if you can control the timing. If sunrise is impossible, the Guru hora repeats through the day at the standard eight hora gap, and any daylight hour that avoids Rahu kaal is workable. On a Thursday, Rahu kaal falls in the early afternoon in most Indian cities, roughly between 1:30 and 3:00 pm, though it moves with your local sunrise.

A Thursday can still be the wrong Thursday

This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that decides whether the day helps you. A preferred weekday is one factor out of four. It does not cancel the other three.

Nakshatra. The vehicle rules avoid Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha and Mula. A Thursday running on any of those five is not a good muhurat, weekday lord or not. Mula literally means root, which reads badly for something meant to move. Krittika is the cutting star. Magha turns the mind toward the ancestors and endings rather than a new acquisition. The nakshatras the rules actively want are Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha.

Tithi. Avoid Chaturthi (4), Ashtami (8), Navami (9), Chaturdashi (14) and Amavasya. Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi are the rikta tithis, the empty ones, traditionally left alone for anything you want to last. The tithis the rules prefer are 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 and 13.

Paksha. Shukla paksha, the waxing fortnight, is preferred. A Krishna paksha Thursday is usable but ranks below a Shukla paksha one when everything else matches.

So a Thursday in Shukla paksha on Pushya nakshatra and Dashami tithi is close to ideal. A Thursday in Krishna paksha on Mula nakshatra and Ashtami tithi is a day to skip, and skipping it is not superstition, it is the same rule set that made Thursday preferred in the first place being applied honestly.

How to choose between two Thursdays

Rank them in this order.

First, nakshatra. It carries the most weight of the four. A Thursday on Pushya or Ashwini beats a Thursday on a neutral star by a wide margin, and Thursday falling on Pushya is the combination people call Guru Pushya yoga, treated across North and South Indian practice as one of the best windows in the calendar for buying something you intend to keep.

Second, tithi. Drop any Thursday sitting on 4, 8, 9, 14 or Amavasya, even if the nakshatra is excellent.

Third, paksha. Waxing over waning.

Fourth, the hour. Between two Thursdays that score the same, take the one where you can actually reach the showroom near sunrise, and keep the registration and the first drive out of Rahu kaal.

Bikes and two wheelers

The same rules apply. Nothing in classical electional practice separates a car from a motorcycle, because the category is vahana, the thing that carries you. If anything Ashwini suits a two wheeler particularly well, since Ashwini is the horse star and has always been the nakshatra associated with fast movement and safe arrival. Thursday works for a bike exactly as it works for a car, and the same five nakshatras and five tithis spoil it.

What to do on the day

Keep it simple. Take delivery in daylight. Do the puja at the showroom or at home before the first proper drive, not after. Make the first journey a short and deliberate one, ideally toward a temple or in the direction of your home rather than a long highway run. Carry the papers with you.
