What is a kundali?

Janam kundali (also called janam patrika, janma kundali, or birth chart) is a Vedic snapshot of the heavens at the exact moment you were born. It maps the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) across twelve houses anchored by your Lagna (Ascendant). Each house governs a domain of life: self, wealth, siblings, mother and home, children and creativity, debts and rivals, partnerships, occult and longevity, dharma and fortune, career and recognition, gains and friendships, expenses and liberation. The grahas in and aspecting each house, along with the rashi (sign) on the cusp, describe the patterns and timing of that domain.

A free online kundali generator does the math: applies Lahiri ayanamsa to convert tropical ephemeris positions to sidereal, computes the rising sign for your birth latitude and time, builds the Rashi chart (D1) and 15 divisional vargas (D2 through D60), runs Vimshottari dasha from your Moon nakshatra, and screens for the well-known doshas and yogas. The interpretation is where craft begins. That is where Vidhata's AI Acharya helps, by citing your actual chart positions when it answers questions, rather than reading generic Sun-sign templates.

Why Vidhata, not the usual sites

Most free kundali sites either show a static template you cannot interrogate, or push you into a per-minute astrologer queue. Vidhata is built for people who want to think about their chart, not be sold to. The chart is computed with Lahiri ayanamsa (the official Indian government convention), real sunrise and sunset for your birth latitude, and the same ephemeris quality used in serious astrological software. The AI Acharya is grounded in classical sources. Every claim is anchored to a planet position, a dasha period, or a ruling lord, never a vague prediction.

We do not run an astrologer marketplace, do not sell gemstones at inflated prices, and never send SMS. The bet: classical-grade computation plus grounded AI gets you most of the way to what a careful astrologer would say, in 9 Indian languages, free.

Frequently asked questions about free kundali

Is online kundali accurate?+

A computed kundali is as accurate as the birth date, time and place you provide. Vidhata uses the Swiss-grade ephemeris under the hood, applies Lahiri ayanamsa (the official Indian government convention), and computes Sunrise and Sunset for your birth city to derive the true Lagna. The math is identical to what a careful astrologer would do by hand. The interpretation, of course, depends on the reader.

What is a janam kundali?+

Janam kundali (also called janam patrika or janma kundali) is the Vedic birth chart - a snapshot of where the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) sat across the twelve houses at the moment of your birth. The chart is read against the rashis (signs) and nakshatras (lunar mansions) to understand patterns of mind, career, relationships and timing.

What information do I need to generate my kundali?+

Three things: date of birth, time of birth (as exact as possible - even a 10 minute drift can shift your Lagna), and place of birth (city or town). Vidhata geocodes the place to latitude and longitude and applies the correct timezone for that historical date.

What is Lagna and why does it matter?+

Lagna (Ascendant) is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It anchors the entire chart - the 1st house starts at Lagna and every other house counts forward from there. Lagna shapes physical body, temperament and the way you meet the world. Two charts with identical planet positions but different Lagnas read very differently.

How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?+

Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed against the stars), Western uses the tropical zodiac (fixed against the seasons). The two zodiacs drift apart by about 24 degrees today - so if your Western Sun is in Aries, your Vedic Sun is usually in Pisces. Vedic also relies on Vimshottari dasha (a 120-year time-sequencing system) and the nakshatras, which Western astrology does not use.

What does Vidhata calculate that other free kundali sites do not?+

Beyond the basic D1 chart: 16 divisional vargas (D1 to D60), Vimshottari dasha to 5 levels (Mahadasha-Antardasha-Pratyantardasha-Sookshma-Prana), 7 Chara Karakas from Jaimini, Ashtakoot Guna Milan for matching, Mangal/Kaal Sarpa/Pitra/Sade Sati dosha checks, KP sub-lord significators, Lal Kitab remedies, Vedic and Pythagorean numerology, Tajaka Varshaphala (annual return chart), and an AI Acharya grounded in BPHS, Phaladeepika and Jaimini Sutra.

Is the kundali really free? Where is the catch?+

The chart computation, dasha, panchang, muhurat finder, divisional charts, basic doshas and AI Q&A are free. There is no per-minute astrologer queue, no scare-tactic remedies, no SMS spam. We bet that classical-grade computation plus grounded AI gets you most of the way, and that you would rather use a quiet tool than a hard-sell marketplace.

Do I need to sign up to see my kundali?+

You do need to sign up to save your chart and use the family vault. Sign-up is free and we never ask for your phone number, so there is no SMS spam. We use email-only auth.

In which languages is the kundali available?+

Hindi, English, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi - 9 Indian languages, end to end. Switch in Settings or pick from the language menu in the header.
