Why the birth sound matters

The reasoning behind Namakarana is simple and practical. The Moon governs the mind and emotions in Vedic thought, so the Moon's nakshatra is treated as the seed of a person's temperament. Beginning the name with the sound assigned to that nakshatra pada is believed to keep the name in tune with the child's inner nature. A name that vibrates with the birth star is thought to sit more comfortably on the person through life.

One caution before the lists. Transliteration softens some sounds. "Va" and "Wa", "Da" and "Dha", "Cha" and "Chha" often blur in English spelling. Treat the syllables as a guide to the opening sound, not a rigid spelling rule. Sanskrit and regional forms of the same name are all fair game.
