Can You Buy a Car on Sunday?

Sunday is neither a preferred day nor an avoided day for buying a vehicle, so the particular date decides the answer and the weekday on its own decides nothing.

That is worth saying plainly, because most people asking this question want a yes or a no. The weekday rule for vahana kraya marks Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as favourable. It marks Tuesday and Saturday as days to keep away from. Sunday appears on neither list. The rule is silent about it, and silence in electional astrology is not a quiet refusal. It means the weekday adds nothing and takes nothing away, and the rest of the panchanga carries the whole judgement.

What silence means when you are standing in the showroom

A muhurat is assembled from several factors and the weekday is only one of them. Book a car on a Wednesday and you begin with a small advantage before anything else is checked. Book it on a Saturday and you begin with a mark against you that the rest of the day has to make up for. Book it on a Sunday and you begin level.

So the useful question is not whether Sunday is allowed. It is which Sunday.

Taking delivery on a Sunday

Delivery is what most people are really asking about, because showrooms schedule handovers on Sundays and that is often the one day the whole family can be there.

The answer is the same, and it applies even more directly. The muhurat is read for the moment the vehicle first passes into your hands and you drive it, not for the moment you sign a booking form or transfer the money. The handover is the event. If the dealership is offering you a Sunday slot, nothing in the weekday rule stands against taking it. Check what nakshatra and tithi that Sunday runs under, accept the slot if they are clean, and ask to shift by a day or two if they are not.

There is a practical corollary. If your delivery date lands on a Tuesday or a Saturday and Sunday is the alternative on offer, Sunday is the better of the two by this rule, because one of those days is marked to avoid and Sunday is not.

How to judge a particular Sunday

Start with the nakshatra. The favourable ones for a vehicle are Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha. Ashwini carries a horse in its own symbolism and has always been read as the traveller's star, which is why it heads the list. A Sunday running under any of these is a good day to bring a car home, and the weekday does not dilute it.

The ones to avoid are Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha and Mula. A Sunday under one of these is a poor day for delivery, and Sunday not being a bad weekday does not rescue it. This is where people get caught. They check the day of the week, find nothing wrong with it, and go ahead on a Mula day.

Then the tithi. Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi are the preferred tithis for this purchase. Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya are the ones to stay off.

Then the paksha. Shukla paksha, the waxing fortnight running from the new moon to the full moon, is preferred for acquiring a vehicle. A Sunday in the waxing half with a clean nakshatra is about as uncomplicated as this question gets.

Surya, and where Sunday's reputation came from

Sunday belongs to Surya. Surya is hot, commanding and self-assertive, and that temperament is the reason Sunday is treated warily for certain other events. The same rule set avoids Sunday for starting a business and for registering property, because those are matters of slow accumulation and legal patience, and the Sun sits badly with both.

A vehicle is a different kind of acquisition. It is about motion and independence, and nothing in Surya's nature works against that. This is why Sunday is left off the avoid list for vehicles even though it appears on the avoid list elsewhere. If you have been told that Sunday is a bad day to shop, that advice came from a different category of purchase and does not carry over to a car.
