Combust Planets (Astangata): What It Means When a Planet Sits Too Close to the Sun

A combust planet has not burned away. Astangata means the planet stands too close to the Sun to be seen. Here are the classical degree ranges, why Mercury and Venus change orb when retrograde, why the Moon and the nodes are special cases, and what combustion actually weakens.

The report never softens it. Mercury: combust. Venus: combust. The English word suggests fire, and a first-time reader can be forgiven for picturing a planet burning up somewhere in their birth chart. The Sanskrit term is calmer and far more precise. Astangata means gone to setting. A combust planet is a planet standing so close to the Sun, as seen from Earth, that it has disappeared from the sky.

That is the whole physical event. Every planet the old astronomers worked with was a point of light they could actually watch. As a planet's path brings it near the Sun's position in the zodiac, it rises and sets closer and closer to the Sun's own rising and setting, until the glare swallows it. For days or weeks it is simply not there: not at dusk, not at dawn. Then it pulls far enough ahead or behind, and one morning it stands clear of the horizon before sunrise, visible again. Surya Siddhanta devotes a chapter to exactly this, the heliacal risings and settings of the planets, and works out the arc of separation each planet needs before the eye can find it. The astrology of combustion grew directly out of that astronomy.

Why the astrologers cared is easy to reconstruct. A graha that cannot be seen was read as a graha that cannot show itself, and showing itself is what a planet in a chart is for. The classical image is not one of destruction. It is a courtier standing so close to the king that he no longer speaks with his own voice. The planet's light is not gone. It is outshone.

The degrees, and why the table is a range

The working figures most of the tradition uses come down from the Surya Siddhanta line of astronomy rather than from any single astrological text, and they run like this. The Moon is combust within about 12 degrees of the Sun. Mars within about 17 degrees. Mercury within about 14 degrees when direct and about 12 when retrograde. Jupiter within about 11 degrees. Venus within about 10 degrees when direct and about 8 when retrograde. Saturn within about 15 degrees.

The word about is doing honest work in that paragraph. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names combustion among the states a planet can be in, but the degree figures circulate in slightly different versions: some tables give Saturn 16 rather than 15, some give Mercury 13 rather than 14, and a degree either way separates several respected sources. No single table is canonical, and this article will not pretend one is. Two things follow. First, a planet 13 degrees from the Sun is not in a different universe from a planet at 15. Combustion is a gradient that deepens toward exact conjunction, not a cliff with a checkpoint. Second, if two calculators disagree about whether your Venus is combust, they are probably both right by their own table, and the useful question is how close the conjunction actually is.

Mercury, Venus and the retrograde asymmetry

The strangest looking rows in that table are the two planets with two orbs each, and the reason is physical, not doctrinal. Mercury and Venus orbit between the Earth and the Sun. When either of them is retrograde, it is passing between us and the Sun on the near side of its orbit, closer to Earth than at any other time and therefore at its largest and brightest. A brighter object can be picked out of the twilight nearer the Sun than a dim one. So a retrograde Venus stays visible at 8 degrees of separation where a direct Venus, on the far side of the Sun and much smaller to the eye, has already vanished at 10. The old astronomers were recording what the sky does. The asymmetry in the table is the sky's asymmetry.

One more consequence of that geometry deserves saying plainly, because it lowers the temperature of a great many chart readings. Mercury never stands more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. It therefore spends a large share of every year combust, and a combust natal Mercury is one of the most common features a chart can have. It cannot be a rare curse and a common occurrence at the same time. Treat it as a condition to weigh, not a diagnosis to fear.

The Moon's combustion is the dark fortnight

The Moon has a row in the table too, but reading it the way you read the Mars row misses what it is. The Moon passes within 12 degrees of the Sun for roughly a day on either side of amavasya, the new moon. Its combustion is not an occasional misfortune. It is a phase of the month, the same darkness every month, and half the point of a panchang is tracking it. The tradition accordingly judges the Moon's brightness on its own scale: which fortnight it belongs to and how far it stands from the Sun, a quantity the shadbala system measures as paksha bala. A person born near amavasya has a dim Moon in this sense, and the classical reading treats that as a real but specific statement about the mind the Moon signifies, its reserves and its visibility, to be weighed together with the Moon's sign, house and dispositor. It is not read as a scorched planet, and stitching an amavasya birth into the same sentence as a burnt Mercury produces bad astrology in both directions.

Weakened, not destroyed

So what does combustion actually do? The classical statements agree on the direction: a combust planet struggles to deliver its own significations. Its karakatvas, the matters it naturally speaks for, come through muffled. A combust Mercury's commerce and argument, a combust Venus's pleasures and partnerships, a combust Jupiter's counsel arrive later, quieter, or routed through someone else's agenda, and the someone else is specific: the Sun. Authority, the father, the state, the visible self. The planet keeps working, but it works like that courtier, in the king's service rather than its own.

Two corrections keep this from sliding into fatalism. First, nothing in the texts describes annihilation. The planet is asta, set, out of sight. It is not removed from the chart, and its dasha periods still arrive on schedule. Second, and this is the point most reports omit, lordship survives combustion untouched. A planet rules its houses by the fixed geometry of the chart, and no conjunction alters that. A combust Mercury that rules your tenth house still rules your tenth house. If that house is otherwise well supported, its affairs remain well supported, and Mercury's periods will still take up its agenda. What combustion taxes is the planet's own voice, not its portfolio.

The tradition itself signals this balance in a famous place. Sun and Mercury together in one sign form Budhaditya yoga, a combination praised for intelligence and skill, and because Mercury hugs the Sun, a large fraction of Budhaditya yogas involve a combust Mercury. The same conjunction is named a yoga with one breath and a weakness with the next. Both statements belong to the tradition. Holding them together, closeness to the Sun sharpens the planet's association with intellect and position while taxing its independence, is closer to the classical mind than choosing one and discarding the other.

Where the tradition genuinely disagrees

Two live disputes are worth stating rather than smoothing over.

The first is natal versus transit. Combustion began as a visibility event in time: Venus disappears for some weeks, Jupiter for some weeks, and the muhurta tradition takes those windows seriously to this day. Marriages and other major beginnings are routinely not scheduled during Shukra asta or Guru asta, and that practice is old, mainstream and strict. Some practitioners reason from this that combustion is at heart a transit phenomenon, an affliction of the moment, and that in a natal chart it is one weakening factor among the many that a full strength analysis weighs. Others hold that a natal combustion marks the planet for life, exactly as any other natal condition does. The honest report is that both positions have serious defenders, and that the muhurta rule is far more settled than the natal one.

The second is combustion against dignity. Take Mercury exalted in Virgo, standing 5 degrees from the Sun. One school reasons that exaltation is the deeper fact: the planet occupies the sign of its greatest capacity, and combustion merely dims its expression. The other school reasons that a planet that cannot be seen cannot spend its exaltation, and calls such a planet promising but obstructed. Between a combust debilitated planet and a combust exalted one, everyone agrees the second is better off. Whether the second is actually weak is argued in both directions by careful astrologers, and in practice the distance in degrees decides more than doctrine does: at 13 degrees the dignity mostly survives, while within 2 or 3 degrees of exact conjunction the combustion dominates any table you use.

Why Rahu and Ketu are never combust

Chart reports never flag the nodes as combust, and the reason illuminates what combustion is. Rahu and Ketu are not bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, mathematical intersections the tradition calls shadow grahas. There is no disc to outshine and no light to swallow, so the definition of combustion cannot reach them. The tradition's own image runs the other way with some relish: when the Sun arrives at a node at new moon, the result is a solar eclipse, which the old texts describe as Rahu seizing the Sun. Far from being burnt by the conjunction, the nodes are the only things in the sky that can put the Sun's own light out.

Combustion and the strength arithmetic

If you have read our article on Shadbala, the six-fold measurement of planetary strength, you may wonder where combustion sits in it. The answer is instructive: it is not one of the six balas. Combustion enters classical judgment as an avastha, a state, weighed alongside the numerical strengths rather than inside them. And the two systems can pull against each other in a way every calculator user eventually meets. Cheshta bala, the motional strength, awards a retrograde planet close to its maximum score, and Mercury or Venus retrograde is precisely Mercury or Venus near inferior conjunction, which is to say combust. So the same planet can carry top marks for vigour in the shadbala table and a combustion flag beside it. That is not a bug in either system. One measures orbital vigour, the other visibility, and a planet can be vigorous and invisible at once. It is also why no single number, and no single flag, settles a planet's condition.

If your report says combust

Start with the distance, not the word. Three degrees from the Sun is a serious combustion. Thirteen is a technicality on some tables and nothing on others. Check whether the planet is Mercury or Venus and whether it is retrograde, since that moves the line itself. Then look at what the planet rules for your ascendant, because lordship is untouched and a well placed house lord carries on. And if the flag sits on a planet that matters to you, the useful question is not whether combustion is bad in general but what this combust planet, with its houses, its sign and its dasha timetable, means in your chart. The sky's version of the story ends the same way every time: the planet comes out the other side. Some weeks after vanishing into the glare, Venus stands clear of the dawn again. The old word for combustion is only the word for setting, and everything that sets also rises.
