Manglik on both sides: when two manglik partners cancel each other

A common Vedic question: I am Manglik, my partner is Manglik, are we doomed? Actually no - and there is a specific classical reason. Here is the cancellation rule, when it works, and when it does not.

The classical rule: same-side cancels same-side

Manglik dosha is created when Mars sits in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12th house from the lagna (or, in some traditions, from the Moon, or from Venus).

The classical Vedic rule for Manglik partners: if both prospective partners have Mangal Dosha, the dosha cancels itself.

The logic: Manglik is a problem because the partner who isn't Manglik experiences disproportionate harshness from the Manglik partner's Mars. When both partners carry the same harshness, neither experiences disproportionate impact - they meet on equal Mars-energy ground.

This isn't an obscure rule, but it is worth being straight about where it comes from. Phaladeepika has no Mangal Dosha section, and neither does BPHS. The both-Manglik cancellation belongs to the later matchmaking literature and to the working practice of family astrologers, where it is the most-cited cancellation of all.

When the cancellation reliably works

The cancellation is robust when:

  1. Both partners have Mars in similar dosha-houses (e.g., both have Mars in 7th, or one in 7th and one in 8th - both within the dosha-house list)
  2. Mars is similarly afflicted or strong in both charts - symmetry is what cancels, not just the dosha label
  3. Other compatibility factors are sound - Ashtakoot 22+, Nadi cancelled, etc.
  4. Both partners are aware of their Manglik status - knowing this and accepting equal Mars-temperament makes the relationship navigable

When the cancellation is unreliable

The cancellation does NOT work cleanly when:

  1. One partner is "low Manglik" (Mars only weakly in dosha-house) and other is "high Manglik" (Mars strongly placed in 7th or 8th, with conjunctions to malefics) - the asymmetry persists
  2. One partner's Mars is afflicted by enemy planets, the other's is supported by friendly ones - different qualities of Mars-energy don't cancel
  3. Manglik check applied from different references - one chart Manglik from lagna, other from Moon - these are different doshas mathematically, classical cancellation logic is less reliable
  4. One or both partners have Mars in 7th house specifically - 7th house is the partner-house; even with another Manglik partner, both partners' Mars can intensify rather than neutralize

A skilled astrologer will assess these nuances. The "double Manglik = cancelled" oversimplification, used uncritically, can mask real issues.

What "Mars-energy temperament" looks like in marriage

If both partners are genuinely Manglik (and not the borderline cases above), they will share these patterns:

  • Strong opinions, frequent debate - both are willing to fight, neither retreats
  • Quick to anger, quick to recover - Mars is hot but doesn't hold grudges (unlike Saturn)
  • Physical activity orientation - both like sports, gym, outdoor activity, manual work
  • Direct communication - neither circles around issues; both name conflicts directly
  • Sexual intensity - Mars governs physical attraction strongly
  • Independence within marriage - neither tolerates being controlled

For two Manglik partners, this combination is functional. They understand each other's temperament because it's their own.

For a Manglik married to a non-Manglik, the same patterns can feel overwhelming to the non-Manglik partner, who may interpret directness as aggression, sexual intensity as demanding, independence as withdrawal.

This is the actual mechanism of Mangal Dosha in mixed marriages. It's not curse, not fate - it's temperament mismatch. And cancellation between two Manglik partners works because both share the temperament.

Other classical Manglik cancellations

The "two Manglik partners" cancellation isn't the only one. Classical sources list several:

  1. Mars in own sign or exalted - even alone, dosha is reduced
  2. Mars conjunct Jupiter - Jupiter softens Mars
  3. Mars in friendly sign and aspected by Jupiter - strong cancellation
  4. Manglik partner over 28 years old at marriage - Mars softens with maturity in some traditions
  5. Saturn in 7th house in Manglik partner's chart - Saturn delays/contains Mars
  6. One partner's Mars in dosha-house from Lagna, other from Moon - these can balance in some readings (debated)

The two-Manglik cancellation is the most clear-cut. The others require chart-by-chart assessment.

A practical decision framework

If you're a Manglik considering marriage:

With another Manglik:

  • Verify both Mars placements are genuinely in dosha-houses (not borderline)
  • Check that both Mars are roughly comparable in strength
  • Confirm Ashtakoot and other compatibility factors are sound
  • Accept that your marriage will be a "Mars marriage" - direct, intense, debate-heavy
  • This can work very well for the right two people

With a non-Manglik:

  • Don't panic - cancellations exist
  • Get a careful chart analysis to see which cancellations apply
  • Understand the temperament question - can your non-Manglik partner handle Mars-energy?
  • If proceeding, perform the classical pre-marital remedies (Mangal Shanti puja, Kumbh Vivah for the woman, Hanuman temple visits)

With strong second-marriage hesitations:

  • Work directly with a senior astrologer
  • The classical recommendations for "delayed marriage Manglik" are different from "no marriage Manglik" - get this distinction made
  • Don't rely on online compatibility calculators alone

What the data says

Anecdotally (no controlled studies exist), Manglik-Manglik marriages in observation appear to have:

  • Lower divorce rates than mixed Manglik / non-Manglik marriages
  • Higher conflict frequency but also higher reconciliation rates
  • Stronger physical attraction durability (often cited 20+ years in)
  • Standard outcomes for children's health and family dynamics - no specific issues attributable to "double Mars"

These observations support the classical cancellation rule, even if the mechanism is "shared temperament" rather than mystical neutralization.

The deeper teaching

Manglik dosha at root teaches us that marriage is temperament-pairing, not feeling-pairing. Two people who feel love for each other but have radically different temperaments will struggle. Two people whose temperaments are matched will navigate even rough patches.

Mars is the most distinct temperament-marker in Vedic astrology. Matching it is the classical intuition that has held up across centuries. Mismatching it without compensating factors (cancellations, remedies, partner awareness) reliably produces strain.

If you're a Manglik considering a Manglik partner - don't fear the dosha. Ask whether the temperament match is real. If it is, the marriage has a strong foundation.

The dosha is the language. The temperament match is the substance.

Frequently asked

Common questions

  • What is Manglik dosha (Mangal Dosh)?+

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal Dosh or Kuja Dosh, occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the lagna, and in some traditions is also checked from the Moon or from Venus. It is one of the factors astrologers weigh most closely before marriage, because Mars in these positions is believed to bring extra intensity into a partnership.

  • Are there different degrees of Manglik dosha, or is it all-or-nothing?+

Practitioners generally distinguish between a mildly placed Mars, sometimes called low Manglik, where Mars sits only weakly in a dosha house, and a strongly placed one, high Manglik, where Mars is powerfully positioned, often in the 7th or 8th house, and may also be joined by other difficult planets. This distinction matters because the classical cancellation rules that apply to a mild placement do not automatically apply to a strong one.

  • If both partners are Manglik, does the dosha really cancel out?+

Classical matchmaking practice holds that Manglik dosha in both partners tends to cancel, because neither person then carries a disproportionate share of Mars's intensity into the relationship. This is a well-established rule among working astrologers, though it is worth knowing it does not appear in older core texts like the Phaladeepika or the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; it comes from later matchmaking literature and practical tradition. It is also not automatic: the cancellation is considered reliable mainly when both Mars placements are comparably strong and the rest of the match, such as the Ashtakoot score and Nadi, is sound. Where one partner's Mars is far stronger than the other's, or afflicted differently, astrologers generally recommend a closer chart-by-chart review rather than assuming the dosha has cancelled.

  • What if only one partner in a couple is Manglik?+

This is the more common situation, and it does not mean the match should be ruled out. Classical sources list several other cancellations beyond the both-Manglik rule, such as Mars sitting in its own sign or exalted, Mars conjunct with or aspected by Jupiter, or the Manglik partner marrying somewhat later in life. Whether any of these apply has to be checked chart by chart, which is why a careful astrological reading, rather than a generic online calculator, is the traditional recommendation before treating the dosha as a serious obstacle.
