Grahan Dosha is named for the Sanskrit word for eclipse (grahana). The dosha forms when the Sun or Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the natal chart, mimicking the geometry of a solar or lunar eclipse. Classical literature notes the configurations themselves (Sun-Rahu, Moon-Rahu, Sun-Ketu, Moon-Ketu) but the elaborate "Grahan Dosha" framing is largely later regional commentary.

Grahan Dosha forms when (1) the Sun is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Surya Grahan Dosha), or (2) the Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Chandra Grahan Dosha).
