Definition: Sun or Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu (eclipse-like configuration).
Grahan Dosha is named for the Sanskrit word for eclipse (grahana). The dosha forms when the Sun or Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the natal chart, mimicking the geometry of a solar or lunar eclipse. Classical literature notes the configurations themselves (Sun-Rahu, Moon-Rahu, Sun-Ketu, Moon-Ketu) but the elaborate "Grahan Dosha" framing is largely later regional commentary.
How Grahan Dosha forms in the chart
Grahan Dosha forms when (1) the Sun is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Surya Grahan Dosha), or (2) the Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Chandra Grahan Dosha). Close conjunction within 5 degrees is the classical strict reading; wider same-house conjunction is a softer formation. The Sun-Rahu and Moon-Rahu versions are considered more disruptive than the Ketu versions because Rahu amplifies and distorts more aggressively.
Common misconceptions
The common misconception is that Grahan Dosha produces inevitable major life calamities and requires expensive ritual remedies. Honest framing: the configurations themselves are old (the Sun-Rahu and Moon-Rahu conjunctions appear in the classical material as scattered conditional verses, not as a named dosha), but the elaborate "Grahan Dosha" presentation is regional and the commercial remedy industry around it is over-priced.
What the dosha actually indicates
Classical effects of Sun-Rahu/Ketu: difficulty with father, authority, and self-confidence; mysterious or hard-to-diagnose health issues affecting the eyes, heart, or vitality. Classical effects of Moon-Rahu/Ketu: emotional volatility, mental health challenges, mysterious psychological patterns, sleep disorders, and difficulty with mother. Both configurations track real and observable patterns.
Classical perspective
Less of this is textual than the usual telling suggests. BPHS does not have a chapter on the luminaries with Rahu; what it has are scattered conditional verses, such as the run in Ch. 20 on the ninth house, where the Sun with Rahu and Saturn in the 9th from the Moon is read against the father's longevity. Saravali's two-planet chapter, Ch. 15, covers the seven planets and does not take up the nodes at all. So the reading that a node on the Sun or the Moon disturbs that luminary's significations is sound and old, but it is assembled from scattered verses rather than set out anywhere as a dosha, and the packaged Grahan Dosha narrative is later still.
When the dosha auto-cancels
Cancellation rules: the affected luminary in own sign (Leo for Sun, Cancer for Moon) or exalted (Aries for Sun, Taurus for Moon) significantly mitigates. Strong aspect from Jupiter on the Sun-Rahu or Moon-Rahu pair softens. Wide separation (more than 5 degrees) reduces the dosha to mild influence. Many flagged charts have these cancellations in some form.

Traditional supportive measures: for Sun-Rahu/Ketu, Aditya Hridayam recitation on Sundays and Surya Namaskar; for Moon-Rahu/Ketu, Chandra mantra and time near water; for both, Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (the standard Rahu/Ketu support) and donation of moon-related (rice, milk) or sun-related (wheat, jaggery) items. We do not recommend expensive Grahan Dosha puja packages.
