Griha Pravesh Muhurat 2026 — Classical Calendar of Auspicious House-Entry Dates

Entering a new home in 2026 is governed by a panchanga test plus a Vastu-vidya rashi test on the lagna at the moment of door-crossing. The calendar below names the windows; the calculator below names the day.

Auspicious months for 2026

The Hindu solar months below carry the highest concentration of griha-pravesha-favoured nakshatra and tithi conjunctions in 2026. Exact daily windows must be read against the house location and the head of household's chart; see the calculator at the bottom.

Hindu monthApprox. Gregorian windowWhy it scores
Magha (माघ)Late Jan to Mid Feb 2026Sun in Makara. Strong shukla-paksha windows; Rohini and Mrigashira concentrate well.

Periods to avoid in 2026

  • ·Chaturmas (Devshayani Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi): July 16, 2026 through Nov 11, 2026. Navagriha-pravesha (first entry to a brand-new house) is paused.
  • ·Dakshinayana caveat: classical sources prefer Uttarayana (Jan 14 to Jul 16, 2026) for new-house entry; Dakshinayana is acceptable for sapravesha but stricter for navagriha-pravesha.
  • ·Shukra Asta and Guru Asta (Venus and Jupiter combust) windows. Refresh from a current panchang before fixing the date.
  • ·Pitru Paksha: Sep 27 to Oct 12, 2026. Avoid new-house entry through the entire fortnight.
  • ·Kharmas: Dec 15, 2025 to Jan 14, 2026 (Dhanu sankranti) and Dec 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027.

How to read this calendar

Inside any of the windows above, the two columns that decide a griha-pravesha date are nakshatra and tithi. The third column to read is the lagna at door-crossing time: even on a strong nakshatra+tithi day, if the rising sign at the entry moment is hostile to the head of household's natal moon-rashi, the muhurta is downgraded. This is the test that separates a printed panchang from a chart-aware calculation.

To locate the actual dates inside these windows, scored against the family's chart and the house's coordinates, use Vidhata's griha pravesh muhurat calculator. It returns the top 8 windows in the next 60 days for the resolved location and (with a free account) layers chandra-bala and tara-bala from the family head's chart.

Classical rules, briefly

Griha-pravesha is treated in two principal texts. Muhurta Chintamani Chapter 6 lists the favoured and forbidden nakshatras, the prohibition on Vishti karana, the chandra-bala requirement on the head of household's moon-rashi, and the strict preference for Uttarayana over Dakshinayana for navagriha-pravesha. Brihat Samhita Chapter 53 adds the Vastu-vidya overlay: the lagna at door-crossing should be a fixed or dual rashi for stability, the threshold direction should align with the house's vastu-purusha-mandala orientation, and the puja sequence should start before sunrise on the chosen day. The two texts together produce the rule-set that Vidhata's scorer applies.

FAQ

What is griha pravesh muhurat?
Griha-pravesha muhurta is the auspicious window for entering a house for the first time (navagriha-pravesha), re-entering after a long absence or renovation (sapravesha), or moving into a rented dwelling (apurva-pravesha). Each category has slightly different limb-weights in Muhurta Chintamani Ch.6 and Brihat Samhita Ch.53.
Which nakshatras are best for griha pravesh in 2026?
Classical griha-pravesha accepts Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Revati and the three Uttara nakshatras (Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada). Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha and Vishakha are explicitly avoided. The 2026 calendar simply locates which calendar days the moon transits one of the favoured nakshatras.
Can I do griha pravesh during Chaturmas in 2026?
Navagriha-pravesha (entering a brand-new house for the first time) is paused during Chaturmas (July 16 to Nov 11, 2026). Sapravesha (returning to an existing home you have lived in) and rental-dwelling entry are permitted with stricter limb checks. If the new house cannot wait, classical sources allow a symbolic puja followed by full pravesha after Devuthani Ekadashi.
Does the lagna at entry-time matter?
Yes. This is the limb that distinguishes electional griha-pravesha from a generic panchanga read. The ascendant (lagna) at the moment the head of household crosses the threshold should be a friendly rashi to the head of household's natal moon, and ideally not a movable rashi (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). Muhurta Chintamani treats this as the deciding factor when other limbs are mixed.
Are Akshaya Tritiya and Devuthani Ekadashi universally good for griha pravesh in 2026?
Akshaya Tritiya (May 18, 2026) and Devuthani Ekadashi (Nov 11, 2026) are widely accepted as abhujit-style universal griha-pravesha muhurtas where chart-matching is relaxed. They are the two dates a family without a priest or chart can use with confidence. Every other 2026 date should be scored against the family's charts and the new house's location.
