Navagraha Shanti is the propitiation rite for the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu). It is the canonical Vedic countermeasure to chart afflictions (debilitated planets, malefic conjunctions, papakartari yogas, eighth-house malefics) and to running Mahadasha or Antardasha of a malefic. The Yajnavalkya Smriti and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Chapter 86 describe the rite.

  • The rite is chart-specific. Before the booking, the pandit reviews which of the nine grahas need primary focus (the running Mahadasha lord, the running Antardasha lord, the most afflicted graha in the chart) and which need standard Shanti.
  • Each graha has its own samidha (sacrificial wood), grain, cloth colour, mantra and ahuti count. Sun is arka, Moon is palasha, Mars is khadira, Mercury is apamarga, Jupiter is ashvattha, Venus is udumbara, Saturn is shami, Rahu is durva, Ketu is kusha. The rite must use the correct samidha for each.
  • Mantra ahuti counts (per BPHS Ch. 86): Sun 108, Moon 1100, Mars 10000, Mercury 4000, Jupiter 19000, Venus 16000, Saturn 23000, Rahu 18000, Ketu 17000. A household Shanti uses one-tenth of these counts (Dashamsha).
  • Dakshina at the end of the rite is part of the Shanti, not separate from it. The Yajnavalkya Smriti is strict on this point.

Navagraha Shanti is the textbook countermeasure to a chart-identified affliction. BPHS Chapter 86 prescribes it specifically before the start of any malefic Mahadasha, on completion of every Sade Sati phase, after a Rahu-Ketu transit through the natal Moon, and before any rite where a strong graha effect is needed (Vivaha, Griha Pravesh, Upanayana, Annaprashana). It is rarely performed as a standalone wish-rite; it is a calibration rite for the running dasha or transit.
