Vivah Puja is the home-Sanskara that consecrates a marriage. It is the most elaborate of the sixteen Sanskaras, and is described in the Apastamba Grihya Sutra, the Ashvalayana Grihya Sutra, and the Manusmriti. The canonical limbs are Vagdana (formal proposal), Kanyadaan (the giving of the daughter), Saptapadi (the seven steps), Panigrahana (the taking of the hand) and Lajja Homam (the puffed-rice fire rite). At minimum a household Vivah requires Saptapadi and Lajja Homam to be a Vedic marriage in the eyes of classical Dharma Shastra.

  • Muhurta is critical. Vivah requires a clean Chandra-bala for bride and groom, a marriage-favoured nakshatra (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati), and a tithi outside Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi, Amavasya.
  • Saptapadi is the moment the marriage is sealed in the eyes of Hindu law (per Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which codifies the classical position). Without Saptapadi the rite is incomplete.
  • The Lajja Homam (puffed-rice offering by the bride, with the groom's brother handing the rice) is the bride's direct participation in the fire rite, and is the limb that marks her formal entry into the new gotra.
  • The pandit will conduct a Patrika Milana (Ashtakoot Guna Milan) before the booking is confirmed to verify compatibility scores.

Vivah Puja is the textbook Vedic marriage rite. The Apastamba Grihya Sutra frames it as the principal Sanskara of the householder stage. Performed correctly with Saptapadi and Lajja Homam, the rite confers the legal status of Hindu marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the dharmic status of Grihastha-Ashrama on the couple. It is not a wish-rite; it is the foundation rite of the household.
