Mangal Dosha — Calculator and Classical Interpretation

Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik in common usage, is the classical Mars-in-marriage-houses configuration described in Phaladeepika 9.21 and the South Indian commentary tradition. Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna creates the dosha, and the classical screening also reads it from the natal Moon and Venus.

This page calculates the dosha for your chart with the full classical screening, reports the strength tier (Lagna-only is the weak case; Lagna plus Moon or Venus is the strong case), and applies every cancellation rule the texts give. The lead question is calculator-first: do you have it and how strongly, not the long-form educational treatment.

The Vidhata free kundali generates a Lahiri-sidereal rashi chart from your birth data, places Mars in the rashi, navamsa and bhava charts, and screens the Mangal Dosha configuration from the Lagna, the natal Moon and Venus. The output reports which house Mars sits in from each reference point, the strength tier, and every classical cancellation that applies to your chart.

No card. No account required for the screening itself; a free account adds the saved-chart history and the dasha-aware compatibility scoring used in match-making queries.

How the classical reading works

Phaladeepika 9.21 names the six houses (1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12) where Mars carries the marriage implication. The text weighs the houses differently: the 7th and 8th are the strongest formations because they touch the marriage karaka and the spouse longevity house directly; the 2nd is the weakest because the family-finance reading is mild compared with the spouse-axis houses. The screening then checks the same six houses from the natal Moon and from Venus, the karaka of marriage, and the chart is read as Manglik only when at least two of the three reference points carry the configuration.

The cancellations are the part most commercial astrology skips. Mars in own sign or exaltation, Jupiter aspect or conjunction, Moon or Venus conjunction with Mars, mutual Manglik between the two partner charts, and Saturn aspect on a 7th-house Mars in own or exalted sign all neutralise the dosha. The calculator reports each cancellation that applies so the strength reading is honest rather than fear-based.

Common questions about Mangal Dosha

The first question users bring to a Mangal Dosha screening is whether the result decides marriage compatibility on its own. It does not. The classical Ashtakoot match scoring carries Mangal Dosha as one factor alongside Bhakoot, Nadi, Gana, Yoni and the four others; even an unmitigated Mangal hit costs only a portion of the total compatibility score, and almost every chart flagged on the Lagna qualifies for at least one classical cancellation that removes the marriage-axis reading.

The second question is whether the dosha predicts widowhood or spouse death. The scare-tactic prediction is not classical. Phaladeepika treats Mangal Dosha as a temperament and friction reading; the spouse-longevity inference attached to the 8th-house Mars is one classical line that the commercial tradition has amplified into a universal prediction. Vidhata does not present the dosha that way and the calculator does not flag a longevity reading.

The third question is whether a non-Manglik can marry a Manglik. The classical answer is yes, frequently, and the texts do not prohibit the marriage. The matchmaker logic that prefers mutual Manglik pairings is a folk simplification of one specific cancellation rule (two Manglik charts marrying each other cancels the dosha), not a universal prohibition on mixed-status marriages.

The fourth question is whether the dosha can be removed by ritual. The honest answer is that the dosha is a chart configuration, not a curse, and a chart configuration is not removed by ritual. The classical remedies support the temperament work the configuration asks for; they do not change the planetary placement. A reading that says otherwise is selling something.

Mitigation per classical tradition

The classical mitigation falls into the four traditional categories: mantra, fast, donation and lifestyle. Daily Hanuman Chalisa recitation and the Mangal Beej mantra are the standard recommendations. Tuesday observance, either a fast or a simple sattvic meal, is the weekly practice. Donation of red lentils, copper or wheat to those in need is the traditional dana. The lifestyle category is the one the classical literature actually emphasises for Mars-dominated charts: dedicated anger management, regular physical exercise as a Mars channel, and avoidance of the late-night arguments where Mars temperament flares.

Vidhata does not recommend buying coral gemstones, expensive Mars yantras or paid Manglik puja packages as a default. The vocabulary the page uses for the dosha and its mitigation is the same vocabulary the educational /dosha/mangal-dosha page carries, kept consistent through the shared web/src/data/doshas.ts data file.

Frequently asked about the Mangal Dosha calculator

How does the Mangal Dosha calculator decide if I am Manglik?+

The calculator places Mars in your sidereal rashi chart using your birth date, time and place, then checks the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses from three reference points: the Lagna, the natal Moon and Venus. A house hit on the Lagna alone is the weak case; hits on two or three reference points are the strong case. The strength tier is reported alongside the classical cancellation rules that apply to your chart.

Why do two astrologers give me different Mangal Dosha results?+

Almost always because one is screening only the rashi chart from the Lagna while the other is checking Moon-Mangal and Venus-Mangal as well. The full classical screening is stricter about what counts as the dosha and more lenient about cancellations. Commercial matchmaking software tends to flag aggressively on the Lagna alone to surface remedy upsells.

Does the calculator apply the classical cancellation rules?+

Yes. The screening reports each cancellation that applies: Mars in own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation (Capricorn), Mars conjunct or aspected by Jupiter, Mars conjunct Moon or Venus, mutual Manglik in the partner chart, and the South Indian commentary cancellations for specific house placements. Most charts flagged on the Lagna qualify for at least one cancellation.

I am Manglik and my partner is not. Should I worry?+

Honestly, no. The classical literature does not prohibit the marriage; it asks both partners to read the temperament implications and to read the running dashas around the wedding date. Mangal Dosha is one factor in the Ashtakoot match scoring, not a single-axis disqualifier. The fear-based prohibition is commercial astrology, not Phaladeepika.

Will the calculator tell me which remedies to perform?+

It will list the traditional classical practices that align with the strength tier reported. The four classical categories are mantra (Hanuman Chalisa, Mangal Beej), fast (Tuesday observance), donation (red lentils, copper) and lifestyle (anger management is the actual Mars work). Vidhata does not push paid puja packages or coral gemstones; the classical texts do not require them.
