Lunar yoga · BPHS 36.3-4, Phaladeepika 6.14 and 6.16 (where it is called simply Kesari Yoga)
Gaja-Kesari Yoga
Jupiter in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Moon.
Gaja-Kesari Yoga is one of the most widely-cited lunar yogas in classical Vedic astrology. The name means "the elephant-and-lion yoga," combining the elephant (gaja) for strength and the lion (kesari) for dignity. The formation in common use is simple: Jupiter occupies a kendra house, the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th, counted from the natal Moon. BPHS 36.3-4 gives the native of this yoga as splendorous, wealthy, intelligent, endowed with many laudable virtues, and well regarded by the ruler.
Gaja-Kesari Yoga എങ്ങനെ രൂപപ്പെടുന്നു
The yoga in common use forms when Jupiter and the Moon are in mutual kendra relationship. Take the Moon's house as the reference; if Jupiter sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house counted from there, the yoga is present. Jupiter in the same house as the Moon counts as the 1st-from-Moon. The yoga is independent of which sign or house Jupiter occupies in the rashi chart absolute frame; what matters is the angular relationship to the Moon. Worth knowing that BPHS states the rule more strictly than modern practice does: at 36.3-4 Jupiter must be in an angle from the ascendant or from the Moon, must be conjunct or aspected by another benefic, and must at the same time avoid debilitation, combustion and an inimical sign. Santhanam notes in his commentary on that verse that the plain Moon-Jupiter angularity is what Phaladeepika calls simply Kesari Yoga, at Ch. 6 shloka 14.
ജാതകന് ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഫലങ്ങൾ
The texts give wealth, intelligence, many good qualities, standing with the ruler, and a voice that carries in an assembly. Practitioners today usually read that as slow but durable rise in social standing, recognition for genuine wisdom rather than showmanship, the kind of reputation that survives setbacks, and an unusual dignity in speech and bearing. Many notable teachers, judges, and senior advisors have Gaja-Kesari prominent. The reading that the results ripen in the second half of life, particularly during Jupiter or Moon Mahadasha, is practitioner convention rather than something either text states.
ബലം നൽകുന്ന ഘടകങ്ങൾ
Gaja-Kesari is strongest when both Jupiter and the Moon are themselves dignified: Jupiter in own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces) or exalted (Cancer), and the Moon waxing or in own sign (Cancer) or exalted (Taurus). Aspects from other benefics (Venus, Mercury) onto the Jupiter-Moon configuration further strengthen it. The yoga is most predictive when neither planet is combust, retrograde in dusthana, or closely afflicted by Saturn or Rahu.
ഭംഗവും പരിമിതികളും
Cancelling factors include: the Moon being weak (within five degrees of the Sun, kemadruma without cancellation, debilitated in Scorpio without neechabhanga), Jupiter being combust or retrograde in 6/8/12, or close conjunction of either planet with Rahu or Ketu. Many natal charts technically show Gaja-Kesari in the rule but the conditional weakness reduces its real effects.
മൂലരൂപം
The Gaja-Kesari archetype: the wise judge who speaks rarely but is trusted absolutely, the senior advisor who is sought for genuine counsel, the teacher whose reputation rests on what students remember decades later. Not the loud success; the deeply respected one.
പരമ്പരാഗത ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ
BPHS 36.3-4 names Gaja Kesari and gives the native as splendorous, wealthy, intelligent, endowed with many laudable virtues, and pleasing to the king. Phaladeepika carries the same configuration at 6.14, where it is called simply Kesari Yoga, and gives its effects at 6.16: the native destroys his enemies like a lion, speaks loftily in an assembly, is long lived, highly renowned and exceedingly intelligent. Santhanam, translating BPHS, points the reader to that Phaladeepika verse himself. Kalyana Varma's Saravali does not carry this yoga under either name.
Gaja-Kesari Yoga നെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പതിവ് ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ
How is Gaja-Kesari Yoga formed?+
Jupiter must occupy a kendra house (1, 4, 7, or 10) counted from the natal Moon. The yoga is independent of absolute house position; the angular relationship to the Moon is what matters.
Does Gaja-Kesari guarantee fame?+
No. It gives the potential for slow-rising, durable recognition. Realisation depends on Jupiter's and the Moon's dignity, the running dasha, and life choices. A weak Moon or combust Jupiter mutes the yoga.
When does Gaja-Kesari Yoga manifest?+
Most often in the second half of life, particularly during Jupiter or Moon Mahadashas. Many natives report a clear shift in public standing in their late thirties or forties as Jupiter's effects ripen.
Can Gaja-Kesari be cancelled?+
Yes. Combustion, retrograde affliction, conjunction with Rahu/Ketu, or a debilitated Moon without cancellation can mute the yoga. Many charts technically show the configuration but realise only partial effects.
Is Gaja-Kesari the same as Raj Yoga?+
No. Gaja-Kesari is a lunar yoga giving wisdom and reputation. Raj Yoga is the broader category formed by lord-of-kendra and lord-of-trikona connections. The two are independent and can co-occur.
