Hamsa Yoga is the third of the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas, belonging to Jupiter. The name Hamsa means the celestial swan, the bird that according to Indian tradition can separate milk from water (a metaphor for the wisdom that distinguishes essence from appearance). The yoga forms when Jupiter, the great benefic, is in own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer) and simultaneously in a kendra house. Hamsa is the yoga of the dharmic teacher, the ethical authority, the wisdom-giver.

Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exalted (Cancer) and simultaneously in a kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna. Jupiter in Cancer in the 1st house, or in Sagittarius in the 10th, are textbook examples. Hamsa is often read as the gentlest of the five Mahapurusha Yogas because Jupiter is the natural benefic of the chart.

BPHS puts the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas in Chapter 75, not in the Chapter 36 yoga collection. Phaladeepika 6.3 gives the Hamsa native as a king extolled by the good, bearing the marks of conch, lotus, fish and goad on hands and feet, with a beautiful body and a righteous disposition. Saravali 37.11-13 gives a reddish face, elevated nose, beautiful feet, a voice like the swan, and a longevity of a hundred years. Neither text ranks Hamsa above the other four; the view that it is the most reliably auspicious of the five rests on Jupiter being the natural benefic, which is an argument practitioners make rather than a statement either text carries.
