• Which gemstone belongs to which planet?+

  The nine Navagraha stones are Ruby for the Sun, Pearl for the Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite Garnet for Rahu and Cat's Eye for Ketu. Each has a traditional finger, metal and weekday for first wearing, listed in the table above. Knowing the pairing is only the first step. Which of the nine, if any, is right for you depends on your lagna and on which planets are weak in your chart, not on the planet you happen to want more of.

• What should you do if your gemstone cracks or breaks?+

  Stop wearing it. A stone that cracks, chips or turns cloudy while you are wearing it is traditionally held to have taken the blow on your behalf and to be spent, and a cracked or milky stone is in any case held to have lost most of its efficacy. What is done next varies by family and lineage. The common course is to remove it, release it into flowing water or give it away rather than sell it, and have a fresh stone certified and energised before wearing again. Do not have a cracked stone repaired or reset into a new ring. Keep the plain physical reading in view too. A ring stone takes hard knocks every day, and gems chip for ordinary mechanical reasons, so a crack is not on its own evidence that something has gone wrong in your life.

• Can you wear two gemstones together?+

  Sometimes, and the answer comes from the two planets and your lagna rather than from how the stones look together. The per lagna lists above are the practical guide. Stones named as suitable for your lagna can generally sit together, and a stone from your avoid list should not be added to your hand because it was a gift or because someone recommended it in general terms. For an Aries lagna, Ruby and Coral are both suitable while Diamond and Blue Sapphire are the ones to keep off, so putting a Ruby and a Blue Sapphire on the same person means wearing two opposed influences at once. Blue Sapphire is never a stone to add casually alongside another. Wear it alone first, through its trial period, and consider combinations only after that.

• How is a gemstone supposed to work?+

  The classical principle is that each planet has a corresponding stone whose crystalline structure resonates with that planet, and that wearing it in contact with the skin tunes the wearer toward the planet's better expression. That is the reason for the details: skin contact, the prescribed metal, the prescribed finger, the natural and untreated stone rather than a synthetic one, and the energising ritual before first wear. The cautionary half of the same principle matters more. A stone for a planet that is already strong in your chart, or for a planet that works as a functional malefic for your lagna, amplifies the wrong thing. That is why the Blue Sapphire trial period exists, and why the tradition treats gemstones as the strongest and least forgiving of the remedies.

• Is there a gemstone for my rashi?+

  Vedic practice does not assign stones by birth month the way western birthstone lists do, and it does not assign them by moon sign alone either. The stone is chosen from the chart: which planets are functional benefics for your lagna, and which of those is weakly placed and worth supporting. That is why two people with the same rashi can be given different stones, and why a stone that helped a relative can do nothing for you. Have the chart read before buying anything, and treat any list that hands out one stone per rashi with no chart behind it as jewellery advice rather than astrology.
