About this pooja

Rudrabhishek is the abhisheka (sacred bathing) of a Shiva Linga to the chanting of the Rudra Adhyaya from the Krishna Yajurveda. The Sri Rudram, an eleven-anuvaka hymn from the Yajurveda Samhita, is the central recitation. Performed on a Monday, a Pradosham, a Shivaratri or any Shukla-paksha Trayodashi, Rudrabhishek is the most authoritative Vedic worship of Lord Shiva and the canonical countermeasure to Mahadasha or Antardasha afflictions involving Shani, Rahu, Ketu or a debilitated Moon.

Key insights

  • Different abhisheka substances target different fruits, per the Linga Purana and Skanda Purana. Water for relief from anxiety, milk for longevity, curd for progeny, honey for wealth, ghee for victory in disputes, sugar-water for marital harmony, panchamrit for the union of all five.
  • Eleven repetitions (ekadashavarti) of the Sri Rudram constitute a Laghu Rudra. One hundred and twenty-one repetitions form a Maha Rudra. The household ekadashavarti is what is most commonly engaged.
  • The rite is performed without any astrological pre-condition. It is one of the few major Vedic rites for which Sutaka (mourning) is not a hard disqualifier; the pandit who performs the rite must be ritually clean, but the yajamana may be in extended Sutaka.
  • Bel patra (three-leaved bilva) is offered continuously through the recitation, one leaf per shloka where the family is present.

Benefits per dharma-shastra

Rudrabhishek is the principal Vedic countermeasure to Sade Sati, Shani Mahadasha, Rahu-Ketu transit afflictions and Pitri-Rin in the chart. The Linga Purana lists it as one of the four classical Shiva-aradhanas (the others being Bilva-archana, Pradosha-vrata and Maha-mrityunjaya japa). For health and longevity questions where the Moon, Eighth House or Maraka periods are involved, Rudrabhishek is the textbook prescription.
