Kemadruma Yoga
Moon with no planet (other than Sun) in the 2nd or 12th from itself, and no planet in a kendra from itself.
Kemadruma Yoga is the classical lunar isolation yoga: the Moon stands alone, with no planet (other than the Sun, which is excluded by classical convention) in the 2nd or 12th house from itself, and additionally with no planet in a kendra from the Moon. The yoga gives a sense of inner aloneness, emotional struggle, and unsupported social position. Classical commentary treats Kemadruma as one of the more difficult lunar yogas, but with multiple cancellation rules that often defuse it.
How Kemadruma Yoga forms
Kemadruma Yoga forms when (1) no planet other than the Sun sits in the 2nd house from the Moon, (2) no planet other than the Sun sits in the 12th house from the Moon, and (3) no planet sits in a kendra from the Moon (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th from the Moon). All three conditions must hold simultaneously. Many charts technically meet the rule but qualify for one of the cancellation rules described below.
Effects on the native
Effects on the native, when the yoga is fully formed and uncancelled: emotional isolation, difficulty maintaining stable mood, social disconnection, family or financial struggles in early life, and a tendency to feel unsupported even when objectively supported. Classical commentary is cautious here: Kemadruma is often over-prescribed, and most charts that technically show the rule actually qualify for at least one cancellation.
Strength factors
Kemadruma operates against the native rather than for them; "strength" of the yoga in the negative sense increases when the Moon is also debilitated, waning, or closely afflicted by malefics, and when no cancellation rules apply. The yoga is strongest in its negative effects when the Moon is in a dusthana (6, 8, 12) without any cancellation.
Cancellation and limitations
BPHS lists multiple Kemadruma cancellations: (1) Moon in a kendra from the Lagna, (2) all planets in kendras from each other, (3) the Moon strongly aspected by Jupiter or Venus, (4) the Moon conjunct a benefic, (5) full Moon (paksha bala) regardless of position. Most natal charts qualify for at least one. Classical texts repeatedly warn against panic-prescribing Kemadruma without checking the cancellation rules.
Archetype
The Kemadruma archetype, when uncancelled: the deeply introverted native who feels disconnected from family and peers, who experiences emotional struggles disproportionate to their objective circumstances, who finds genuine companionship slowly. The cancellation shifts this archetype toward someone who learned solitude early and converted it into capacity.
Classical sources
BPHS Ch. 36 lists Kemadruma alongside the auspicious lunar yogas. Phaladeepika is detailed on cancellation rules and emphasises that uncancelled Kemadruma is rare. Saravali warns that many astrologers misdiagnose Kemadruma by missing one of the cancellation rules.
Frequently asked questions about Kemadruma Yoga
What is Kemadruma Yoga?+
Kemadruma Yoga is the lunar isolation yoga: the Moon with no planet (other than the Sun) in the 2nd or 12th from itself, and no planet in a kendra from itself. It signals emotional isolation when uncancelled.
Is Kemadruma always bad?+
No, and it is often over-prescribed. Multiple cancellation rules exist, and most charts that technically show the configuration qualify for at least one cancellation. Always check the cancellation rules before treating Kemadruma as severe.
What cancels Kemadruma Yoga?+
Five common cancellations: Moon in a kendra from the Lagna, all planets in kendras from each other, Moon strongly aspected by Jupiter or Venus, Moon conjunct a benefic, or a full Moon (paksha bala) regardless of position.
What does uncancelled Kemadruma indicate?+
Emotional isolation, difficulty maintaining stable mood, social disconnection, and a tendency to feel unsupported. Therapy, regular sleep, and family connection support the native more than ritual remedies.
How is Kemadruma diagnosed correctly?+
By checking all three formation conditions AND all five cancellation rules. Classical commentary repeatedly warns against panic-diagnosing Kemadruma without checking the cancellations. Vidhata's chart engine checks both.
