Can You Buy a Car on Friday? Vehicle Muhurat Rules

Yes. Friday is one of the four weekdays that Vidhata's vehicle muhurat rules mark as preferred for buying a car, and it is preferred for a reason that belongs to this purchase in particular: Friday is Shukra's day, and Shukra is the karaka of vehicles.

That is the short answer. The longer one is worth two minutes, because a preferred weekday is a starting point rather than a guarantee, and because most people asking this question are really asking about the delivery date, not the payment date.

Why Friday, and not just any good day

In the karaka scheme that runs through classical Jyotish, every planet is the natural significator of a class of things. Shukra (Venus) holds vahana, the vehicle, along with comfort and the enjoyment a possession gives its owner. When an astrologer asks whether a chart supports a car, the fourth house and Shukra are the first two places they look.

Friday earns its place on the preferred list because the lord of the day and the karaka of the object are the same graha. That is a narrower and more specific reason than general auspiciousness, and it does not exist for most other purchases. A business launch gets that kind of fit from Budha's Wednesday or Guru's Thursday. A car gets it from Friday.

The rest of the week, by the same rules:

Monday, Chandra's day, is preferred. The Moon governs comfort and easy movement, and Monday is a soft, favourable day for acquisitions generally.

Wednesday, Budha's day, is preferred. Mercury rules documents, registration and negotiation, which is most of what a vehicle purchase actually consists of.

Thursday, Guru's day, is preferred. Jupiter's day carries the general blessing that electional practice attaches to a new possession.

Tuesday and Saturday are avoided. Mangal on Tuesday brings sharpness and the accident significations nobody wants attached to a vehicle. Shani on Saturday brings delay, and in the vehicle context that reads as breakdown and repeated repair.

Sunday sits in neither list. It is not preferred and not avoided for a car. If Sunday is the only day the showroom can hand over and the rest of the panchang is clean, it is workable.

What still spoils a Friday

This is the honest part of the answer. A Friday can be a poor day to buy a car, and the weekday will not rescue it.

Nakshatra. Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha and Mula are avoided for a vehicle. Mula literally means root, which reads as a vehicle that stays put, and Krittika carries a cutting quality. A Friday on Mula is worse than a Wednesday on Pushya.

Tithi. Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya are avoided. Prefer Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi.

Paksha. Shukla paksha, the waxing fortnight, is preferred. A waxing Moon suits anything meant to grow into your life.

Rahu Kaal. Within the day itself, Friday's Rahu Kaal falls in the fourth eighth of daylight, which works out to roughly 10:30 in the morning until noon at Indian latitudes. Keep the handover outside it.

The Friday you want is Friday plus one of Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati, Uttara Phalguni or Uttara Ashadha, on a good tithi in the waxing fortnight. That combination is common enough that you will find one within a few weeks of almost any date you have in mind.

Buying and taking delivery are two different questions

Most people run them together, and dealerships make it worse by spreading the booking, the payment and the handover across ten days.

Classical practice cares about the moment the vehicle becomes yours and first moves under your ownership. That is the delivery: the keys changing hands, the first drive out of the showroom gate. The booking form and the loan disbursement do not carry the same weight, and worrying about the muhurat of a signature is effort spent in the wrong place.

The practical consequence is simple. Book whenever the paperwork is ready, and negotiate the delivery slot so that it sits inside a good muhurat. Showrooms in India are entirely used to this request. Ask for a named date and a named time window, and get it written on the delivery order, because "Friday morning" turns into 11:15 and lands squarely inside Rahu Kaal more often than you would expect.

If registration and delivery fall on different days, the delivery date is the one to elect.
