Vivah Muhurat 2027: The Months Weddings Pause, The Months They Open
2027 has three windows where Vedic tradition closes weddings outright, and three windows where it allows them. Here is the calendar reasoning behind both, and why the exact date still has to come from a chart, not a published list.

Every year, around the same time, the same question arrives from families who are nowhere near planning a wedding yet: "what are the shubh vivah dates in 2027?" It is a fair question to want answered early, because venues book out a year ahead and families like to work backward from a date. But it is also a question that gets answered badly more often than any other in Vedic astrology, usually by a forwarded list of dates with no explanation of where they came from.
This piece will not hand you that list. What it will do is lay out, with the same precision the calendar itself allows, which parts of 2027 are closed to weddings and which parts are open, and then explain honestly why even the open parts are not a free-for-all. The exact date for your wedding has to come out of a chart reading. This article exists so that by the time you sit down for one, you already understand the structure the astrologer is working inside.
The three windows that are closed, full stop
Three periods in 2027 are closed to weddings by rule, not by preference. These are not soft suggestions. They come from where the Sun and the planet Guru (Jupiter) sit relative to each other, and from a older ritual calendar tied to Lord Vishnu. None of this is up for individual interpretation the way a nakshatra choice is.
Dhanurmas (Kharmas), carrying into early 2027. When the Sun moves into Dhanu (Sagittarius), auspicious ceremonies pause. This stretch begins around 16 December 2026 and ends precisely on 15 January 2027, the day of Makar Sankranti, when the Sun's move into Makara (Capricorn) reopens the wedding calendar. If you want the fuller reasoning for why this particular month is set aside, we cover it separately in why weddings pause during Kharmas. For 2027 planning purposes, the one number that matters is that nothing gets scheduled before 15 January.
Meen Kharmas, mid-March to mid-April. The same mechanism repeats when the Sun enters Meena (Pisces), around 14-15 March 2027 (this start is approximate, since the Sun's ingress time shifts by a few hours year to year). The pause holds until 14 April 2027, Mesha Sankranti, also celebrated as Baisakhi in the north. The Sun's move into Mesha (Aries) reopens the season for a second time in the year.
Chaturmas, mid-July to mid-November. This is the longest of the three and the one most families already know by name. It begins at Dev Shayani (Hari Shayani) Ekadashi, around 15 July 2027, just before Guru Purnima on 18 July, and runs until Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on 10 November 2027. Tradition holds that Vishnu enters a four-month yoga-nidra over this stretch, and weddings along with other major sanskars wait for him to wake. The 10 November date is fixed with confidence because it falls the day before Tulsi Vivah, which lands on 11 November 2027. The mid-July start, like the mid-March one above, is approximate because Ekadashi tithis are lunar and their exact calendar date can shift by a day depending on the almanac followed.
Notice the pattern in the hedging here. The start of each pause is given as "around" a date because it tracks a planetary ingress or a lunar tithi, both of which move slightly year to year and can differ by a day between panchangs. The end of each pause is stated with a specific date because Makar Sankranti, Mesha Sankranti, and Dev Uthani Ekadashi for 2027 specifically have already been fixed. Keep that distinction in mind if you see a source stating the July Chaturmas start as a hard date. It is not one.
What is actually open in 2027
Strip out the three closed stretches above and what remains is roughly three windows:
Mid-to-late January through mid-March. Mid-April through mid-July. Mid-November through mid-December.
These are the months within which a Vivah Muhurat can exist in 2027. They are not, on their own, a list of wedding dates. Think of them as the rooms in the house you are allowed to be in. Which chair in which room you actually sit in is a separate question, and it is the one most families actually came here to ask.
The constraint almost nobody explains clearly: ast periods
Here is the part that gets skipped in most "2027 wedding dates" content, usually because it is harder to write than a calendar lookup.
Even inside an open window, Hindu tradition does not permit a wedding while Jupiter (Guru) or Venus (Shukra) is in combustion, called Guru-ast and Shukra-ast respectively. Combustion happens when a planet sits too close to the Sun in the sky to be seen, swallowed by the Sun's own light. Jupiter governs wisdom and the groom's significations in a marriage context, and Venus governs love, beauty, and the bride's significations. A wedding held while either is invisible to the naked eye is considered to start the marriage under a planet that cannot currently see or be seen, which tradition treats as inauspicious regardless of how good the rest of the day looks on paper.
We are not going to name specific Guru-ast or Shukra-ast dates for 2027 here, and you should be wary of anyone who does so without working from a live ephemeris. These windows are not fixed to the solar calendar the way Sankranti dates are. They depend on where Jupiter and Venus actually sit relative to the Sun in a given year, which shifts because the planets move at their own pace, not the Sun's. The only honest way to get them is a current panchang for 2027 or a practitioner checking the live positions. This is also the real reason a genuine, usable list of 2027 vivah muhurats is so much shorter than the open calendar above. Three windows of open months look generous until ast periods are subtracted out of them, which is exactly why no single published list travels well from one source to another: whoever built it had to make the same subtraction, and small differences in method produce different short lists.
So how does a specific date actually get chosen
Once you are inside an open window and clear of an ast period, picking the day is a layered process, not a lookup. A practitioner is weighing, together:
The nakshatra the Moon occupies that day, with some stars like Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, the Uttara group, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttarashadha, and Revati generally favoured for marriage. The tithi (lunar day) and the weekday, since certain combinations are held to be stronger for this particular sanskar than others. The lagna, the ascendant rising at the exact hour the ceremony itself takes place, which needs to be clean of certain afflictions regardless of how good the broader day is. And the part that a generic calendar can never account for: the bride's and groom's own birth charts, checked against each other through guna milan, and each checked individually for ongoing dashas and personal doshas that might make an otherwise fine date wrong for these two specific people.
This last layer is why "best wedding dates 2027" lists, even accurate ones, cannot do the whole job. The best date in the open calendar for one couple can be a weak date for another couple entirely, because the charts involved are different. We go through this selection process end to end, with the reasoning at each step, in how an auspicious marriage date is chosen, which is the companion piece to this one. That article is the how; this one is the 2027 when.
Where to take this next
If you have a wedding to plan inside one of 2027's open windows, the honest next step is not scrolling further for a list. It is working out, against the two actual charts involved, which days within that window clear the nakshatra, tithi, lagna, and ast checks together. Ask Acharya can walk through that for your specific dates and birth details, in your own language, and if you have not pulled the charts yet, free kundali is where that starts. Bring both birth details. The calendar above tells you which months to even consider. The chart tells you the day.
Frequently asked
Common questions
When can weddings be held in 2027?+
Inside three open windows: roughly mid-to-late January through mid-March, mid-April through mid-July, and mid-November through mid-December. Outside these, three closed stretches apply (Dhanurmas/Kharmas until 15 January, Meen Kharmas until 14 April, and Chaturmas until 10 November). Even within the open windows, the exact date still needs a chart-based check for Guru-ast and Shukra-ast and for the couple's own charts.
Why do weddings pause during Kharmas in December-January 2027?+
Kharmas, also called Dhanurmas, happens when the Sun moves into Dhanu (Sagittarius). This begins around 16 December 2026 and ends on 15 January 2027 at Makar Sankranti, when the Sun enters Makara and the wedding season reopens. Tradition treats this month as spiritually turned inward rather than suited to new beginnings like marriage.
What is Chaturmas and why does it block weddings until November 2027?+
Chaturmas is the four-month period beginning at Dev Shayani Ekadashi, around 15 July 2027, when Lord Vishnu is said to enter a yoga-nidra. It ends on Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, 10 November 2027, the day before Tulsi Vivah. Weddings and other major sanskars traditionally wait for this period to close before resuming.
What is Guru-ast and Shukra-ast, and why do they matter for wedding dates?+
Ast refers to planetary combustion, when a planet sits close enough to the Sun to become invisible from Earth. Guru-ast is Jupiter's combustion period and Shukra-ast is Venus's. Both planets carry marriage significations, and tradition avoids scheduling weddings while either is combust. These periods shift year to year with the planets' actual positions, so 2027's specific ast dates need to be checked against a current panchang rather than assumed from a prior year.
Can I just pick any date in an open wedding month in 2027?+
Not safely. The open months only clear the two big blanket restrictions, Kharmas-type pauses and ast periods. Within them, the specific day still needs a nakshatra that suits marriage, a workable tithi and weekday, a clean lagna at the ceremony hour, and a check against both partners' own charts for dasha and dosha conflicts. A date that works for one couple can be weak for another.
Where do I get the exact Vivah Muhurat for my wedding in 2027?+
From a chart-based reading rather than a generic published list, since the final date depends on both partners' birth details, not just the calendar. Ask Acharya at /app/ask can work through the 2027 constraints against your own charts, and /free-kundali is the starting point if you have not generated your charts yet.
Everything above is read from sidereal positions computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa. Tools that work tropically will give a different answer for the same birth details, which is worth knowing before comparing two readings. How the free astrology apps compare on what they compute with.
