Definition: Moon with no planet (other than Sun) in the 2nd or 12th from itself, and no planet in a kendra from itself.
Kemadruma Dosha is the lunar isolation configuration. The Moon stands alone, with no planet other than the Sun (excluded by classical convention) in the 2nd or 12th house from itself, AND no planet in a kendra from itself. Classical commentary treats Kemadruma as one of the more emotionally challenging configurations, but with multiple cancellation rules that frequently defuse it.
How Kemadruma Dosha forms in the chart
Kemadruma Dosha forms when (1) no planet other than the Sun sits in the 2nd from the Moon, (2) no planet other than the Sun sits in the 12th from the Moon, and (3) no planet sits in a kendra from the Moon (1, 4, 7, 10 from Moon). All three conditions must hold simultaneously. Many charts technically meet the rule but qualify for one of the cancellation rules described below.
Common misconceptions
The most common misconception is that Kemadruma is universally calamitous and produces inevitable poverty or isolation. The texts are in fact blunt about the effects: Saravali 13.7 says the Kemadruma native is deprived of food, residence, robes and friends. What they also do is build the escape clauses in. BPHS 37.11-13 excludes any chart with a planet in a kendra from the Lagna, and Phaladeepika VI.5 reports three further cancellations, so most charts that trip the geometry never carry the dosha at all.
What the dosha actually indicates
Classical effects of uncancelled Kemadruma: emotional isolation, difficulty maintaining stable mood, social disconnection, family or financial struggles in early life, and a tendency to feel unsupported even when objectively supported. The dosha tracks real psychological and social patterns; it is not a curse but a description of a particular unsupported lunar position.
Classical perspective
BPHS 37.7-13 sets Kemadruma directly after Sunapha, Anapha and Duradhara as their inverse, and folds one cancellation into the definition itself. Phaladeepika VI.5 gives the same yogas and then reports, as the view of others, three cases in which there is no Kemadruma. Saravali 13.2 takes the opposite tack and widens the formation instead, adding the empty-kendras and unaspected-Moon conditions.
When the dosha auto-cancels
Two texts carry cancellations, and it is worth keeping them apart. BPHS 37.11-13 builds only one into the definition: if any planet other than the Sun occupies a kendra from the Lagna, there is no Kemadruma. Phaladeepika VI.5 adds three more, and reports them as the opinion of others rather than as its own: a planet in a kendra, the Moon associated with a planet, or planets occupying a kendra reckoned from the Moon. The further rules in circulation, a benefic aspect on the Moon or a full Moon by paksha bala, are practitioner conventions with no verse behind them in either text. Most charts qualify under one of the first four, and those four do substantively defuse the dosha.
Traditional supportive practices
Traditional supportive measures, presented factually: regular Moon-friendly practices (sleeping by 10pm, meditation, time near water), donation of rice and milk on Mondays, Chandra mantra recitation, and (most importantly for genuine cases) therapy and family connection. Therapy and structured emotional support work better than ritual for the genuine emotional isolation Kemadruma describes. We do not recommend expensive Chandra remedies.
