What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or simply being Manglik, is a placement of Mars in the birth chart that classical Jyotisha links to friction in married life. The word dosha means a fault or an imbalance, not a curse. Mars is the planet of heat, drive and assertion. When it sits in certain houses, the old texts say its energy can press on the part of life that asks for patience and accommodation, which is marriage.

The placement is read from three reference points. The most common is the Lagna, your rising sign. Many astrologers also check Mars from the Moon, and some weigh it from Venus, the natural significator of the spouse. A chart can show the dosha from one reference and not the others, which is exactly why a flat yes or no rarely tells the whole story. The calculator above grades the result instead of giving a blunt verdict, because the strength of the placement matters far more than its bare presence.

Which houses make someone Manglik?

Mars is treated as dosha-causing when it occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house counted from the reference point. Each of those houses touches the marriage in its own way. The seventh is the house of the spouse and partnership itself. The eighth governs longevity and the deeper, more private side of a shared life. The fourth rules the home and domestic peace. The twelfth covers the bed, privacy and what is spent. The first, your own self, colours how forcefully you meet a partner.

There is genuine disagreement in the tradition about the second house and the first. Some lineages from South India add the second house, the house of family and speech, to the list. Others count the dosha only from the ascendant and ignore the Moon. This is not sloppiness, it is the natural spread of a living oral tradition. What it means in practice is that two honest astrologers can read the same chart and reach slightly different labels. A graded percentage, like the one shown above, is closer to how an experienced reader actually weighs the chart than any single rigid rule.

What cancels Mangal Dosha?

This is the part the fear-sellers leave out. The same texts that describe the dosha describe a long list of conditions that soften or cancel it, and those cancellations are common. When Mars sits in its own signs, Aries or Scorpio, or in its sign of exaltation, Capricorn, the placement loses much of its sting because Mars is comfortable and well-behaved there. When Mars is in the sign of a friendly planet, or aspected by Jupiter, the natural teacher and protector of marriage, the harsh edge is dulled.

Age matters too. The tradition holds that the intensity of Mangal Dosha fades as a person grows older, which is why marrying a little later is itself treated as a mitigation. And there is the well-known reciprocal rule: when both partners carry the dosha, the two placements are said to balance one another, and the concern largely dissolves. Whenever a real cancellation is present in your chart, the calculator flags it in the mitigation line rather than letting the raw placement frighten you.

Does it really affect marriage?

Honestly, far less than the anxiety around it suggests. Mangal Dosha is a single factor in a chart that has dozens, and a marriage rests on far more than one planet. Plenty of long, warm marriages belong to people who are textbook Manglik, and plenty of difficult marriages have no Mars placement worth naming. Classical astrology never claimed Mars alone decides a marriage. It asked the reader to weigh the whole chart, both charts in a match, the strength of the seventh house and its lord, and the dasha periods running at the time.

Treat the result here as information, not a sentence. If the chart shows a strong, uncancelled placement, that is a reason to choose a partner thoughtfully and perhaps to marry with a calm mind rather than in a rush. It is not a reason to call off a relationship or to spend heavily on remedies sold on fear. If you want a grounded reading, take the result to an astrologer who will look at the full chart, including the cancellations, before saying anything at all about your marriage.
